Was a supercharger an option on the early '80s 5 litre SEC coupes?
Although this car seems to have a fair amount of power I think a supercharger would be a great improvement.
Even if theis is not a standard option fo0r this motor is there another 'charger that can be adapted?

No there was no option for a supercharger on the sec! i have been considering to do it to my sec 500 amg, would be a fantastic performance upgrade!

brilliant

I have a car that was sold to me as a 500SEC AMG, than I was told later that it was not by a friend in the motor trade who looked up info from the chassis number. How can you tell if it a genuine AMG.
It has the spoiler, the badges, it performs better than my other 500SEC, and the exhaust note is different.
It is a chronic rust bucket, but if it is AMG then I will reconsider a strip down and body rebuild. And perhaps a 'charger to boot!

AMG offered their parts to dealers and specialist outlets to install. If one of these places installed AMG parts to your car, then its not a genuine built by AMG, but its still more or less the same thing. AFAIK the AMG engine tuning was only available from AMG themselves, but other bolt on items such as bodykits, exhausts, wheels etc were available from these third parties.

For your car to be eligible to wear an AMG badge, you needed at least three pieces of AMG upgrades.

Koenig in Germany still offer a supercharger kit for the M117 engine as fitted to your car, but its not cheap.

From their website:

based on V8 (560 SEC)

supercharger engine
331 KW / 440 HP / 680 NM
price incl. installation: € 20.000,–
kit price € 15.000,–

performance:
0-100 km/h 4,9 sec.
0-200 km/h 16,9 sec.
standing 1/4 mile 14,8 sec.
top speed 300 km/h
driving performance depends on gear ratio
