hi all. After selling my 107 500sl, and having a dabble with a 300ce, I've purchased an 88' 560sel.
Nice as it is, there are issues that I can't understand, the biggie being....
on purchase, I was informed that she had pneumatic suspension, which was changed to standard shock absorbers in May.
I think the seller meant SLS, but would these shocks have a container with hydraulic fluid near the engine? There's one there that I was informed was for the suspension.
Anyways, the point I want help with, is that the rear of the car sits noticeably lower than the front.
The new shock absorbers came from 'Motorworld(!!) and appear to have been a straight swap.
Are they the right ones? Is it a straight swap? Am I better off replacing them with SLS replacements?
Also, the Russian VIN reader tells me it can't find my VIN number. is this something to worry about?
Is there a post on how to fix my electric rear blind?
Is there a recommended place to buy a camchain tensioner etc?
thanks for any and all help....

Can you put up your VIN number for a while.

The shocks will not alter the height of the car

Hi.
My VIN no is WDB1260392A415681.
Tried it on the russian site and the American benz forum with no luck.
She's ivory (was grey), with beige leather, standard all round except the shocks.
Only options not there are the pre-heater, the heated rear seat and the pneumatic suspension. Attached pics are when she was a wedding car....

gotta say, for the money, I can't take the smile off my face.
Manchester to Devon @80mph, gave me 19mpg - a pleasant surprise.

self leveling back end!

i had a 560 years ago what a car but it did develop a fluid leak at the leveling valve by the back axle, you should be able to see it easily with its pipes and leveling arm , as the back end sinks with load it ( should ) come back up , its all hydraulic from a pump at engine and fluid container, no air! if the back ends on the floor its hydraulic problems. best wishes, rapido.

hi. thanks for the help so far.
does this mean that the car is still using hydraulics in the suspension?
Where would it be if the shocks are no longer SLS?

How can I tell?
what do I do?

well, I don't know if I'm relieved or not.
Found out that the previous owner disconnected the rear hydraulic system when he changed the rear shocks thinking it was now redundant!!

Is there anywhere in Devon that can look at, and resolve this?
I'm a numpty regarding these things, so such advice would be great.

what is she actually running on now then?
is she safe to drive?

Also, I assume that explains my vibrations over 80 mph driving back??

So you are not far from me :D The best and cheapest would be the Citroen garage in Ottery St Mary that is a good place for hydraulics.

The car should be the correct height with the standard springs if done correctly

It is safe to drive, but the front is too high so take it easy for now while we sort this out,, where are you in devon

hi. I'm in Princetown, having moved from Okehampton. i've got a colleague looking at it on thursday, but having seen the diagram of the system, I'm thinking I may not be able to leave the standard shockers there. The diagram indicates that the shocks (rams?) are part of the hydraulic system, so they can''t be bypassed.
Am I right?

Not quite sure yet,, sadly I do not have the part number for the spring with standard suspension, for with this set up the shockers will not change the height, so if the springs have not been changed, then the car could be too low without the hydraulic part working
