- Mercedes E-class, 2005, E270CDI (2.7) + 1992 Mercedes 500SL (R129)
Before I was buying this E class I looked everywhere at running costs and I saw mixed opinions just thought I should post my own experience.
I bought my 2005 E270 for just under £4,000 1 owner from new a years MOT the only slight concern was with the service history it was missing some between 2013 and 2016 which wasn’t ideal but all of the service history had been done by Mercedes themselves and looking at the bills the owners really did do everything! I’ve since gave it a full service by a Mercedes specialist.
First of all I’m 23 at the time when I bought this I was 22 so the additional premium I had to pay was £450 (came from an 09 punto) so in total I paid £1,400 for a years insurance. I’ve just renewed at the age of 23 and it’s now £840 with a low enough excess so not too bad there.
Fuel isn’t something to rave about obviously it’s not terrible I do a fair bit of miles 15k a year minimum and on average I get around 36mpg maybe 37mpg. On a long run I did get 48mpg which isn’t too bad at all! Too fill up you’re looking at around £92 (from empty and obviously based on where you live).
Reliability (touch wood) has been perfect nothing major has gone I’ve had too do upper ball joints but I did these and it didn’t cost me a lot nor did it really take much time. I’ve had no issues with this car at all and I’ve covered easy 14k miles in it.
The itself drives great I do actually find it very good at handling for its size and for the kind of car it is surprised me a lot! I’m not a typical 23 year old boy racer at all do I don’t rag my cars! But when you want to floor it the old girl still has a lot of pull!
All in all it’s a great car by far the best car I’ve ever owned and the most reliable so far and hopefully my next car will be another E class!
I hope this can help any young first Mercedes Benz buyers!
