I think mine must be a fuel leak. It smells like a Saudi Arabian oil field just under the near side rear door. I wouldn't light a match anywhere near it that's for sure. Very disturbing. I've got it booked in for tomorrow so will update you with progress and cost then.

That's where the fuel pump and filter are located Ian, probably just a leaking fuel pipe joint.

Thanks C220 - that sounds like excellent advice.
The garage I was due to take the car into yesterday let me down, but they're (apparently) going to look at it today.
Your advice has been passed on to them with grateful thanks.
I'll keep you posted and let you know their verdict later on today.

George - it looks as if your prognosis was spot on! Much to my relief, the garage have deemed the fault to be with a pipe leading to the fuel pump, so nothing too major.

Otherwise, the car needs 4 new tyres, wiper blades front and rear, and rear pads, so nothing too traumatic.

The replacement part will be fitted next Wednesday, after which I should start to see a significant improvement in the present horror story mpg....
Of course I'll let you know how she gets on once the pipe is fitted.

Thanks for your input guys, its been appreciated.

Just to bring a conclusion to this post, a couple of months after acquiring the vehicle, and at least 6 trips to the mechanic, the problem has finally been solved.
It transpire there were actually two seperate issues, one with a sensor in the Engine Management system, and the other with the fuel sender.
The LAMBDA Probe cost me £120 to replace, whilst the fuel sender set me back £105.
Given I've probably done this and more on petrol, I only wish I'd been billed for this a good deal sooner!
The car is now running beautifully and I'm actually, at long last, beginning to enjoy its company.
Really appreciate all the feedback - hopefully my experience will point someone else in the right direction in the future.
