A friend of mine got stopped and fined £30 today for driving with his front fog lights switched on in clement weather. It was on the A38 in Staffordshire, near Burton-Upon-Trent.

He claimed he never knew it was an offence to do this, which was no excuse in the eyes of the law.

I was secretely quite glad as I do often get quite annoyed by the glare of others' fog lights.

Good, its one of my pet hates. This is one of the few occasions where I think the police should be more active - in fact they should be allowed to take a hammer to the offenders fog lights....

Hoo - ****** - ray!!!
One of my pet hates. Foglamps used when the weather is not foggy.
Other pet hate:
People who drive just on sidelamps in thick fog.
From one extreme to the other.

I've never been dazzled by anyones foglights, it's not like driving around with your full beam headlights on is it?

Not only a pet hate - the use of fog lamps in good conditions is illegal.

I suspect people do it cause they think it looks cool? :-?

There's more and more people, especially over here in Germany, who drive on the motorways on full-beam, regardless of oncoming traffic! Britains motorways are a godsend for having Cats eyes, but a wet German autobahn at night, all shiny and mirroring and no real indication of where the road partitions are, becomes sheer driving by luck with a KSG (Knob Seed Gargler) heading your way full beam! Same for the fog-lights, if these whacko's are that blind they cant see at night without fog-lights or full-beams, they should be banned from night driving!

What annoys me are motorcycles driving with their main beam on during the day. I find that my eyes are drawn towards the lights and they sometimes really hurt with the intensity of their lights.

Seems all the comments are one way. Certainly rear fogs in good weather at night are a pain in the a*** but front fogs.......yes I know they`re illegal but then again Volvos` front heads on permanent dip during daytime.....at least my 960 many moons ago or are they now cut off for UK models?

They don't. Motorcycles suspension means that the front rises on acceleration and makes their dipped headlight look brighter as the beam is pointing higher than normal.

It has always been possible to switch off day running lights on Volvos - a simple process provided in the Owners Manual (a sequence of various switch actions)
I turned off mine on the S40, but I think I was in the minority of people who read manuals....:(

My Harley lights are on all the time and still a*holes don't see me...

My previous car was a new shape Volvo S40.I got the daytime running lights disabled prior to delivery, but it has a downside. When you're driving and the sun goes down the instrument lights come on automatically,so it's very easy to forget to switch on your lights. At least until you get used to it.
I work in Sweden & from a bikers point of view daytime running lights(on cars) mean that bikes with lights on don't stand out as they do over here.Stupid idea if you ask me.
