Every now and again my wife's A150 gets a transmission warning come up, the car then won't go over 40 and drives very jerkily. If she stops the engine, restarts it then all is ok, sometimes for a week, sometimes a day.

Any ideas could be causing this and how to fix it? She has warranty wise cover, so hoping this will pay for whatever repairs but wedw like to kniw what we're talking about and if we could fix it (not being keen mechanics).

First thing would be to check the ATF oil level, from that point your best to have it seen by a independent Mercedes specialist with STAR, they will be ble to read all the codes and live data to see what the box is doing.
You may be lucky and just need a fluid and filter change but if not then recon of the 722.8 box is around £2k

If you are in/near London, Forrera in Hammersmith is an A class specialist. - may be worth a call to him.
(Recently rebuilt my a-class autobox for about half cost mentioned above)

When it happens, on the dash where there is the gear indicator “D” “R” etc, ask her if the letter “F” has ever popped up, or if she’s not noticed/looked, ask her to do so next time.

Check which garages warranty covers near you who are MB specialists - maybe talk to them if you have a good local independent MB specialist and check they will cover work done there if it needs it. A general garage won’t have STAR -the MB diagnostic tool which is what it needs to be diagnosed with. Generic code readers just cannot interrogate the ECUs and components to the same level, and you may not get a correct diagnosis.

There is a plethora of things it ‘could be’ - electrical, sensor failure, gearbox, ignition, injection, fuel delivery.

First step is a proper star diagnosis.

Thanks for the replies. We are nowhere near London unfortunately but have found an independent with STAR just a couple of miles away and it's booked in for investigating on the 29th. Hopefully the warranty we bought with the car will cover anything major. I'll post an update afterwards.

thanks for the reminder. In the end it was the speed sensor in the gearbox which had failed. Our local German specialist sorted it, and yes, very expensive and they had the car for 4 weeks whilst the part arrived. However it's running better than ever before.

incidentally Warrantywise refused to contribute as we didn't have the invoice from the service at 37500 showing a gearbox oil change, the book was stamped but they blocked every discussion.

we did check with other makes using the same gearbox, the problem is that after the new sensors put in the whole system needs to be re-programmed and it has to be by Mercedes.

Cypress Autos, Lowestoft, were excellent and fought hard on our behalf to get the warranty to pay up.
