Air Intake ID ?

Hi,

While changing my air filter the other day, I noticed something I did not recognise, it is attached to the air intake pipes, after the MAF sensor.

Subsequent Google searches have identified it as an " Air Intake Damper Cannister" can anyone explain what it does, and what is inside it, because it looks sealed for life.

Interesting that this is fitted to the 112 and not the 113, I would like to know what it does.
