I have just changed the gear box oil in my2001 SLK230 auto,722616 box. I dropped the sump off, changed the filter and refitted the sump, when I came to refill it only took 2.5 ltrs. I used a proper dipstick to dip the oil and it is showing upto the 80 mark, does this sound ok?

No! If you dropped the sump it will take at least 4 litres. Is the vehicle level, engine running & in park?

some may also be in the torque converter, which may have its own drain plug?

Drain plugs on the torque converters were dropped around 99

ivanslk if I were you I'd run the car for a few miles, drain the pan again (you don't need to remove it this time), and top back up, thus diluting the old fluid with new. Obviously there are diminishing returns each time you do this.

I managed to get 3.5ltrs back in mine, then ran and drained the sump and put 2.5ltrs back in, it is worth collecting what you drained out and measure it and put back the same amount, you must have the oil hot to check (15miles at least) and running in park when you dip it.

Is that up to the lower 80 mark or the upper 80 mark?.........you need to ensure that the engine and gearbox are at FULL working temp (20 mile blast) and then dip the oil, it needs to be UP to but NOT past the 80 'max' mark.

When i did mine it took 3.5 ltrs.

Thankyou o wise men of mercedes, I have just re-dipped the oil, after taking it for a run, with the engine running and in P, and yes a litre and a half more oil needed to be put into it. It drives alot better now with the gear change alot smoother, so again thankyou for your help.:D

OK, see your problem. Put at least 3 ltres of oil in and then start the engine, bring it up to working temperature, min 80 Degrees and then run it through the gears and now, with the engine still running, check the oil level.
