Anybody help with a problem that i have with the auto box on my 02 e320 cdi with the 722.6 gearbox? what it is doing is not changing smoothly from 1st to 2nD it seems to grab second gear too harshly, after 20mph its perfectly smooth, and it does not do it if you drive in Winter mode on the box! many thanks Dave

It cant do it in the W mode as that is a second gear start.

So what is causing the shift problem then malcolm? is it a internal fault in the box? or can it be cleared like you suggest with star? I know that if you have charging problems and not getting sufficent voltage then this causes all hell to break loose with mercs and this is what i have recently had with alternator going down, makes me think possibly to get checked on star again? what do you think? cheers Dave

The 722.6 does not have this as a fault, under voltage can store fault codes, the gearbox memory is very small, I do know that we have a few faults where they hang on to 1st or 2nd too long, has the fluid ever been changed, its due every 40k miles

I would get the codes cleared, I cant answer the high or low fluid bit, and the effect on this. I think that it would have to be a long way out to have any effect, was it there before

The oil level and condition in automatic transmissions is absolutely crucial. Faults can be stored in the star machine but it depends on the nature of the fault. As Malcolm has already stated, when the selector switch is in W, the car pulls away from standstill in 2nd gear to prevent wheel spin in cold conditions. A good thorough oil and filter change, and then getting the level correct (when the gearbox is properly hot) will resolve most problems. Check that the central electrical connector isn't leaking internally or externally either, this is a common fault and can cause some problems. An adaptation using Star will also resolve issues but an update of software may be necessary.

Yes, I checked the level with car in park setting engine running and at 80 degrees and if anything was a bit on the high side, was thinking of draining a little out, and forgot to say star is not showing any faults, many thanks Dave

I think its a new gearbox needed in my case to be honest, and considering that the car has only done 100,000 which i do not think is massive mileage is pretty poor again for a quality car! cheers Dave
