My wife's 230SLK (R170) is now approaching nine years old, but has covered only 25,000 miles and is still on it's original gearbox oil. Is it best to have it replaced on age against mileage and also a new filter - is the torque converter drainable on this model? The car drives perfectly, but I sense it's time for a change.

Thanks in advance for advise

I have the same thoughts as you, and a similar mileage, my car gets serviced by date and not mileage. I do not know if these fluids take in moisture.

I service the car myself, but because I don't have a hoist I've shyed away from doing the gearbox oil change. It's booked into my local indy for a brake fluid change next month so I think I'll get them to do the auto oil / filter service at the same time. ;)

Change it, the fluid does age like all other highly modified additive rich oils. the fluid does not absorb atmospheric moisture like brake fluid does, but it does suspend water that gets mixed into it when the fluid is working for a long period, this water will not help and ten years is along time for it to accumulate a considerable amount from condensation and the like. if left for some time the water and fluid will separate and then the water can rust away whatever it is stuck to.
