Can some one please confirm that difference between "E" and "S" on my
W204.

Do I assume that when selecting "E" I am pulling away in 2nd gear and when in "S" 1st gear?

Are the gear ratios the same in both modes?

Thanks in advance

E start in second unless using kick down, also changes up sooner than when in S.
Gear ratios the same .

E and S settings

Can I ask a question here, as i was just about to start a new thread abut this!

I have just bought a 2010 C250 and I can't detect any difference between the E and S settings.

It still starts in 1st in "E" even when pulling away gently (I can count four upward changes to react 5th). We are NOT talking about full throttle.

Also, when the car is in gear but stationary but "creeping" up a slight incline at idling speed, there is no difference when switching between "E" and "S". On my old C220 you could feel it switching between 1st and 2nd.

Am I missing something here? Is there some simple reset, or is this something the garage would have to fix?

Many thanks for any advice.

IIRC the newer models all start in 1st irrespective of the mode. The only difference is the change points and reverse gear ratio.

My five-speed S211 starts in first in both C(omfort) and S(tandard) modes, despite others insisting this isn't the case. S holds the car in gear longer before changing up, and is slightly more responsive. I drive everywhere in C, as it's more pleasant.

Forward gear ratios are the same, but reverse is different between the two modes.

I can tell no difference either between C & S in my 7 speed R Class, both start in 1st & I can tell no difference in change points either.

On all 5 speed boxes the S starts in 1st and WC 2nd, 7g boxes are some thing else and on some cars they start in 2nd in C and others do not, just depends on the car.

For my 212 (7G), the manual says that in 'S' mode it pulls away in first gear, whereas for 'E' it doesn't actually say pulls away in second, instead it says pulls away 'more gently' (whatever that means).

I think there is a slight difference in how it pulls away, although not huge. However, there is a big difference in how it goes through the gear changes, so if you're doing a bit of traffic light quarter mile drag racing the same car with 'S' selected would definitely leave one with 'E' in its dust. :D

I also find that overtaking from around the 40-60 mph mark is much quicker with 'S'

Gear ratios the same .

As I thought - the ratios are the same, but are the "shift" patters the same?

Like I said...

Maybe it's an engine selection thing whereby the bigger engines do as Malcolm suggests, but my E220CDI never pulls off in second.

Having been for a prolonged test drive - I think in "E" or "S" it pulls away in 1st, but in "E" it's noticably more sluggish . Maybe the "mapping" in the ECU's are different !!

Standard and Winter. Winter is exactly the same as Comfort. 2nd gear start and lower shift points. Different reverse ratio for easier manoeuvrability (apparently). Not just for snow but any slippery surface, gravel etc..

And just adding that on the 5 speed box,in W/C the car will not roll back on a hill, the 7 speed box does not have this feature and they will, not immediately but after a few seconds.

My 5g box in the CLK definitely starts in 2nd in C mode and 1st in S mode - if you change mode when stationary at the lights you can sometimes feel the gear change happen and there is a definite difference between the 2 starts. Different change points too and they DO make a difference when, ahem, pressing on. :D:D

Perhaps the newer 5g boxes are programmed slightly different for economy reasons (is that what the E means instead of the old C, maybe?) so always start in 1st but with a different change strategy? Not having had a 7g box I can't comment about those.

GAD have advised that S mode on my car actually reduces acceleration as compared with E mode.

I am assuming that it is because the car is a diesel and does not really benefit from the higher revs.
