I haven't timed it but the info does seem to be correct - certainly using S rather than E provides no acceleration advantage on my diesel. It may be different with higher revving (but lower torque) petrol engines.

On my car using S starts in 1st gear. Using C it definitely starts in 2nd gear (7g), but it is still pretty quick if you are heavy with the pedal.

If you press the pedal onto the kick down in C then it starts in first gear.
