Hello

I have a C220 diesel 1996 model with an automatic gearbox and the gear changes are harsh especially the first two. I have noticed that when the car is cold the changes are smoother and if you take your foot off the accelerator before it changes gear the change is smother.

Any help it would be much appreciated

Thank you.

When did you last have an ATF change?

We do get a lot of threads on the harsh changes for the first two gears on the electric boxes, apart from the fact that these cars lock up when cold, to warm up the CAT quickly, they do behave in this lumpy manner at times.
No one has ever posted a cure, only the fact that a fluid change, makes things a bit better. The 7 gear box does not suffer from this problem.

agree

I agree, Ive seen many with harsh gear changes. Like the others Id suggest a service on the trans - will do wonders. Also check the adjustment Pressure cable for the trans. Ussually on the bottom of the throttle cable.

Can anyone confirm if a 93 280e (104 engine) should hold in gear when cold?

Pls have a lok at the attached http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=16659 I think I paid ~£130 for the ATF change at my MB dealer, although because of not having a torque converter drain plug only 4ltrs could be changed (out of 7). Labour was the same just less £ for the ATF

Hello Kiwi, I do not think that yours has an electric gear box, the 4 speed do not, also the 772.5 early 5 speed do not it only applies to 722.6 boxes.

MERCS ONLY off boston manor road in Hanwell do an excellent job an dthey use genuine MErcedes parts, they charged me £60 + vat for the ATF and filter change on my E220 Coupe, excellent job i have no problems with it, it actually reduced the harshness of the gear changes in 1 and 2.

Gearchange

I had poor gearchanges on my 320SL, 93 with a five speed box. Changing the ATF improved the change, but within a week I lost fifth gear and had to have the box rebuilt £1800. Sometimes, apparently, if the ATF fluid has never been changed (mine was 100000miles) trapped sediment can be dislodged and cause problems. Get a guarantee that any problem caused will be fixed at expense of garage. Unlikely !
