Automatic gearbox stuck in 1st + white smoke

Hey guys having a bit of trouble with my box, earlier on I started my car and wouldn't come out of 2nd gear so I pulled over turned the engine off and waited, after restarting the car it will only go into 1st I was only 1mile from home so had to drive very slowly + lots of white smoke was coming out the exhaust.. I have topped it up with the correct gearbox oil and still no luck.. Any suggestions what it can be?? And will it be expensive to fix.. thanks

I had this problem with mine (assuming yours is auto) ,it would not change gear stayed in 2nd and the display was just showing a blank square instead of which gear I was in, It was the selector turret and was quite expensive, but no white smoke so could be a different problem or 2 combined, not much help I know hopefully more info will be offered soon
