Thanks Andy, the garage says that they have put one on order through Mercedes.

However, the garage were surprised when I mentioned that a supplier had two on the shelf. They were surprised because they said the part is unique to my vehicle and that it’s coded for security reasons.

The garage has asked for details of your supplier and price, could you let me know these details? He hopes the part will be with them sooner if he orders it through you and possibly at a more competitive price.

The dealer i use is mercedes benz colindale off the top of my head if i remember correctly when i looked it up the part was £480 inc vat.

Also on epc it doesnt say its anything to do with security and a theft relevant part. The only ones i know that are like that are the S SL AND CL class as they dont have a steering lock and it locked via the selector.

If they are saying it is a security part have you got to produce all your documents i.e log book photo id so they can order it.

Just to clarify the part we are talking about it the part in the centre console that you use to select drive park etc.

How well do you know the garage are you sure its a new part and they are not trying to source a second hand part thus making it difficult to get hold of.

Thanks Andy,

I don’t know the garage well and this has been going on since the end of January (31).

When I told the garage that there were two in stock their exact words were,
“floor shift! How can they have them in stock! It’s coded to the chassis, I’ve been dealing with Mercedes and they say they have not got it in stock because it’s coded to the chassis; each one is individual to the car's chassis. The moment you order it (the part) because it is a security item it gets coded to the chassis number, you cannot take one from another car, it’s coded to your chassis number”

So if they are saying its a security item are you having to produce any documents for it.

As mercedes will require these as the same if you wanted to order a key.

If it were me i would phone your local dealer and just enquire about ordering one and see what they say.

Have they quoted you a price for the part they want to replace.

Thanks Andy,

They are not asking for any documents, I will call the local Mercedes dealership as you suggest.

Regarding a quote for the part etc the garage originally quoted me £550 for the whole job which was to sort the transmission out. The garage have said they will do the floor shift as part of the original quote, so there will not be any addition charge to me.

By the way is the floor shift mechanism just another name for the gear selector module?

I now have my car back from the garage, however because it has been off the road for so long the battery has gone flat (the car will not turnover). It’s a 320cdi auto estate year 2000 X reg.

I have read conflicting advice on charging the battery. So should I remove the battery to charge it? Or should I connect the charging leads directly onto the battery (without removing any existing connections) and charge it up in the car? Thank you
