automatic transmission rebuild recommendation

hello,

my W123 automatic transmission has failed, I have tried to get a replacement box via eBay but failed.

can anyone recommend a mechanic in the North London area to do this work? The best price I have so far is £675 + £200 for a torque converter.

I want a good job done as I'm keeping the car, but want value for money.

Best wishes,

You'll may need a replacement box and a new torque convertor. I'd budget about £1500

Ivan at Automerc in Hornsey knows these cars and will be able to diagnose it properly. Automerc: 020 8340 2966

thanks nick, i love this car but am looking for a cheaper alternative. its not worth spending £1500 on the box. i know automerc but find their rates pretty high. i realise they are very good at what they do, but they would sub-contract the box rebuild, wouldn't they?

I think you need a diagnosis before deciding. Ivan will be able to diagnose it and then you can look at your options

If you take it to an automatic transmission specialist I suspect they will say what they always seem to say - "you need a complete rebuild and it's false economy not to replace the torque convertor"

Be really up front with the guys at Automerc re costs. They are realistic

An update: so I visited AutoMerc and spoken to Ivan. I am sorry to report that I found his attitude almost impossible. Not only was I charged £65 for him basically telling me my car is completely ****e, but he was unwilling to pin point where the problem was. He was vague, and unclear. I'd recommend NOT using this garage for complex diagnosis issues. They only like seeing cars which are 100% original, basically they like 'easy jobs' and nothing else.

Throughly disappointed, and I certainly won't be using them ever again.

So sorry to hear of your experience, why not try these people, they only do auto boxes and never a bad word from any of them, they do not charge to tell ou what is wrong

go to info and find one near you.
