Dear Members.
I know that Autumn is drawing in when for some reason my car has difficulty in starting first thing in the morning.
Where i live, On top of a cliff overlooking the Atlantic ocean, We get a hell of a lot of sea mist at this time of year, Which is the time most i get starting up and drive problems. Okay, I drive a 1990 300E, Possibly the best Merc ever built, "Comebacks welcome," But is their anything i can do to protect the engine overnight or something i can apply to the engine to disperse or cover the engine from the sea mist.
My biggest fear is corrosion and wondered if their again was anything on the market to alleviate this as well.
Thanks.
Mike.

Wax oil for the body work, spray the inside of the cap once a week with WD40 should help!!

A non drying switch cleaner is much better in the cap and rotor arm

A big sheet, that reaches from the top of the screen, over the bonnet and down to the floor. Wedge it inside the doors to hold it in place. (obviously a proper car cover is better).
Keeps the ice off your windscreen on those frosty mornings and will help stop the moisture from entering the engine bay.
Also helps with seagull poo!

Seriously, it surprised me how well this works. I had a bench grinder in my workshop and it was going rusty, simply from moisture in the air. I draped a teatowel over it and magically, no more rust.

rust wise living near the coast is a big problem. we often see cars with badly rusted underpinnings which have obviously lived beside the seaside (oh i do like to be beside the sea etc). it is impossible to completely avoid it, but a proper waxoil and regular checks/re-applications will help. otherwise, move somewhere dry and arrid inland, central spain perhaps?;)

i have a poor understanding of valour, and no comprehension whatsoever of discretion.

but trying to stop the accelerated rust on a 'seaside car' is like try to hold back the tide (who's liking the simile?), there are soooo many parts that can be affected it is only time before the ship goes down.

Well I live by the sea,,or some 150 meters above it,it is a 5 min walk away,,al little different from the East coast that is almost flat, most cars around here keep quite well. The V70R has been outside all of its life, and never a problem and not a rust spec either

There ARE advantages - no seagull poo for starters. Cars don't seem to rust either, they just get very dusty. Apart from those which become submerged in floods, that is - but thats another story

Dear SAM/UNIT.
You say give the distributor a spray(wd-40) once a week, Have you seen the distributor in my car, It's like major surgery just to get the housing off.
Looked in my Haynes Manual and looks like you have to have specialist minature socket set just to get near it.
What is it you drive?, Or do you think all engines are the same as your's.
Get a grip.
Mike.

You wouldn't think so, if like me you lived in a house overlooking the north sea; for the next 5 months all I can expect to experience is cold and dampness with rarely a brief glimpse of the sun.:(
