My CLC 220 CDi Sports Diesel is going to need a "B" service in the next few months.

The main dealer wanted me to take out a second mortgage for the last service.

Q What does a B service entail (the book says nothing)

Q At what mileage does the brake fluid REALLY need to be changed

Thanks in anticipation

See the MB website. Most dealers now offer fixed price servicing and many offer some fixed price repairs too. You can put in your car and get info on what is needed.

Most car makers say change brake fluid every two years. Lives depend on brakes so most of us do it, but there are some experts on both sides of the argument about whether to do it that often or not.

If you know a good Mercedes specialist indie near you, (recommendations are given on this website often), then that can give a saving and a very personal service.

An A service with a dealer is around £200 and a B service around £3-400. Most give big discounts to owners of older cars.

As your car is a CLC, it will still be under warranty. I would therefore stick to the service periods recommended by MB, but shop around for the best price.

You tend to find that service prices vary each time so whilst on paper an A should be cheaper than a B, if the A falls when you need coolant, brake fluid and maybe a set of pads, your next service might be a nice simple cheap one.
Best to call your dealer for a quote. They should be able to tell you what 'extras' will be required. Armed with this info, you can then call round a few MB specialist indies for a comparison quote (telling them exactly what the MB quote covered, not just the service letter). Then make your decision.

That is the best way, but when the dealer tells you that you need brake parts, do point out to the indie that you may not, as you will get told you need new disc when they are only ⅓rd of the way through their useful life from MB

Nor have I. Always get a report on how much wear. Never needed pads in under 35k miles and discs much more.

To be fair I have been 'advised' that my brakes needed renewing when IMO they didn't. I don't consider anything wrong in this as such. If I spent my days in traffic and was a bit heav footed then there's a good chance that I wouldn't have seen the next service before the warning light came on and then no doubt I'd complain about why they didn't do the damn things at the service. They can't win so the dealers have agreed levels for the advisory. Not sure what they are. Maybe 50% wear, maybe more.

I do know I had 2 services with the same 'you need brakes' advisories, clocked up another 6,000 miles and then replaced them myself, noting that, albeit close, they still weren't down to the sensor. But then I live on motorways so whereas I can do 50 miles with 0 brake usage, in town that could equate to 150 actuations. They have no idea what I do so, so long as I'm aware that they err on the side of caution (as they should) then I can make my own decisions. My Dad also ignored the last advisory, he's now a few hundred miles overdue for his next service (booked in in the next couple of weeks to tie up with the MOT) and his warning light has just come on.

Well many have been told this as shown in many threads, I have answered hundreds of the post, as your dealer knows that you go elsewhere for these things they do not want to become embarrassed.
