On Monday I had to charge the consumer battery on my R230 SL500 due to a consumers offline message. Once the battery completed charging I went for a drive and within seconds I had a red battery icon and a visit workshop message. I checked the battery and it was reading 11.7v which I believe indicates a duff battery. Today I replaced the battery with a new one which is fully charged and measuring over 13v but I still get the red battery icon indicating a malfunction. It i turn the engine off and on again the malfunction has gone but after a few seconds it comes back. I have no error codes on my iCarsoft but I did an error code clear anyway. Do I need to do something else?

Red battery icon sometimes means a fault with the regulator or alternator itself. I've not had the battery icon staying on when changing the battery on ours. Have you checked the output from the alt?

This is the first time for me time. I will lookup what I can do to check the alternator.

Annoyingly I need to get the cars MOT done as well, hopefully this issue won’t affect the MOT.

Tested starter battery 12.4v, started engine to check the alternator and voltage dropped to 12.3v.

Did the voltage continue to drop and have you tested the output to the consumer battery as well?

The voltage with the engine running wasn’t stable, I believe it should have jumped to 14v with the engine running so something is wrong with the charging either the alternator or something else associated with it.

Did you check both batteries ? doesn't the German decide which battery to charge first ?
