Bosch has found a way to reduce NOX emissions to 1/10 of 2020 rules.

The big motor manufacturers are already putting pressure on the diesel naysayers.
Expect the climate against diesel to swing, as politicians realise how dependent the world's economy is on diesel fuel, with no viable mass market alternative for many years yet.

They could make a good start by insisting it's fitted to every HGV, LGV, bus and coach first - and what about the diesel trains still running around our rail network? Tractors and other agricultural machinery? Emergency generator sets (hospitals etc.)? What percentage of the emissions the tree huggers are bleating about is actually from diesel passenger cars - bet there's no accurate research on that, just the broad brush "Diesel engines"!!

HGVs are already cleaner than cars.
The other thing to remember is that however much you can reduce NOx in diesels a petrol engine will inherently always be able to be made cleaner due to the way NOx is made in an engine. The very high compression ratios used for diesel engines are the main reason diesels have such high NOx emmisions.
That's why diesel cars need adblue to meet requirements but petrols don't. Put adblue on a petrol engine (it's only used for NOx reduction) and the petrol engine would become far cleaner. Apply this technology and the same thing happens.
The only way diesels are becoming cleaner on emmisions is because they are becoming ever more complex and complexity usually reduces reliability.

Not so sure about the HGV thing LK - get in heavy traffic near an HGV in the 968 cab, roof down, and herself is very quickly complaining about the exhaust smell from the HGV.

My last ship before I retired used 90 tonnes heavy fuel oil a day, that's in a 37,000 HP 7 cyl engine.
In the news recently maritime countries have signed agreement to reduce Nox emissions, The are talking about fuel cells and even going back to sails, ok for small coastal ships but not a 303,000 tonne VLCC.

Brittany Ferries have fitted exhaust scrubbers to their ships which reduce NOx and particulates as well as removing sulphur products. Apparently they cost £10M per ship to fit.

But they want a 40% improvement in efficiency by 2030 and 50-70% by 2050.
Apparently they now put out 97% less sulphur, 70% less particulates but I couldn't see a figure on NOx.

The newest ferry is running on LNG so very low in NOx , zero sulphur and 25% less CO2 as well

When the full story of the VW (including many other auto companies and their tier one suppliers like Bosch) cheatgate comes out it will be interesting to see where this new development sat in the whole scheme of things. Usually a development such as this would be a long time below the radar before it was released to the public, (so patents and other rights to the technology were well sown up).

Big ships need to be nuclear powered.

The response will be just like Amber Rudd (the one with the Pinnochio nose) this week: "I never saw that memo..." !

Nope, sails for VLCCs have been proposed both rigid steel and rotor tube type. 30% Reduction in fuel burn quoted, even if that’s double or triple reality it’s still very much worthwhile.

Nope they don’t. Nuclear power only makes sense in a very limited series of roles where continuous high speed steaming is required, and refuelling/ reprocessing infrastructure is available readily. Plus, a large proportion of ports will be closed to such ships for political reasons.

LNG is the proposed fuel of choice to reduce NOX in VLCCs and VLGCs, huge amount of development directed that way, something I’m working on presently ...
