Brake lights

Off side rear brake light does not work but near side does - lamp defective comes up on the dashboard panel. Before fitting a new bulb, as the existing one looked OK, I switched the two pink bulb holders to the opposite sides. Offside still does not work. Has anyone any ideas ?

Many thanks PS 1998 E240

I simple digital volt meter is the best way to determine if it is a missing live or ground feed

Thanks for your reply. If it is missing a live feed would this mean that it is simply a fuse to that particular bulb that has gone - ALL other lights work OK - Is that bulb likely to have its own fuse ?

The fuse arrangements show that fuse 9 is the stop lamp fuse and they are both wired together unlike the rear and front lamps in that the fuse arrangements is that the lamps are wired fuse 4 is the left front and rear lamps and 3 is the right front and rear

Had the a similar problem and after much messing around the MB dealer changed the complete bulb holder unit saying " some of these were problematic" Sorry but I have no idea what they meant by 'problematic' but I have had no issues since and that was four years ago!

Thank you Dosco for jogging my memory,,indeed the lamp circuit boards did have a problem, and we had many post on this years ago, the fault is where the lamp holder looses contact with the PCB

Hi again. Mine is slightly different in that the lamp holder and bulb in the offside fitting does not work but when the same lamp holder and bulb is moved to the nearside fitting it works and visa versa it doesn't. So it must be the circuit to the offside fitting that has the problem. However, if the fuse for the rear brake lights covers both sides then it isn't the fuse, so ...........??

Thanks again

hi i had a the same fault on a rear light i found the fault to be a dry joint in the light failer warning control unit in the fuse box 3 dry joints in fact, re-solderd the joints and have had no problems with lights since
