So that is labour only,no parts?
If that's the case,I'd steer clear of the dealer,because I suspect that it may end up 'needing' new discs,pads,h/brake shoes.....
They are prepared/able to take it in at short notice,indicating that work may be a little slack,& service managers have targets to hit too!
As for the indie-how did they come to your attention,were they recommended to you by someone?
I think the indie route is always best,but it should be the right indie.
Remember,the motor (my) trade has worked very hard to gain the glowing reputation that it has!!!!
It thrives on brakes,because the very mention of them to a customer has their cheque books out.
Forgive my cynicism,but I've seen it all before.

The £282 sounds like the cost of replacing discs & pad & possibly shoes. I had mine replaced recently (not the shoes) and the figure was very similar. Mine were replaced by an indie and the figure included labour. I imagine a dealership would charge a lot more for labour.

I have experience a dealerships and they like to replace more parts than absolutely necessary. If the OSR brake is overheating (discoloured disk?, smell, noise) then Merc will likely replace the OSR and the NSR brake components too.

I am wondering if the brake light is another symptom of the same problem. Pistons do stick but in over 40 years of driving I've had more problems with drum brakes than disc brakes.
