problem solved :lol::lol: replaced batteries then checked the key fob in my camera ,and there was only the red light showing no blue /white light that must opperate the c/locking and alarm /imob .so stripped the fob down as per instructions ,icould se no probs ,so then cleaned batt contacts and the circuit board with an electrical switch cleaner ,the type t/v techs use .reassembled and low and behold all working fine .ps i also disconected the battery for 30 mins so not shure which of the two things i have done cured my prob but i belive the general clean of the fob did the trick cheers . ps my old barreries still work ok ,but have left new ones in anyway

Glad to read you managed to sort your problem out Mandrake, I will try to replicate evreything you have done. Meanwhile mine goes from bad to worse!

I checked battery connections, and vacuum pump - everything appeared okay. Tried the reset procedure and then I got the red and green lights flashing alternately.

Went to disconnect the battery again and that's when the alarm when mental. Every time i try to connect battery back up, the alarm goes off. I have now left it over 24 hours and will wait till morning before ripping out the alarm so I don't get all the neighbours twitching their curtains and tutting at me!

Can anyone tell me the best way to disconnect the alarm (permanently)?

PS. Thanks for everyones help. This is a great forum.

How many wires go into the alarm siren… try unplugging it first, can you describe the siren, colour? any numbers on it?

Sorted.

Went to have a look at the siren. It is black, with no numbers or letters. It has one main bit of wiring going into it, and a slot for a key which I assume is for turning the alarm off though I do not have this key. So I actually managed to get inside and disconnect the wires.

Thanks.

Good result in the end, ensure the wires you disconnected are insulated with tape as one of them will still be live.

my alarm is turned off i belive as i too have only one key ,no alarm key .but my alarm hs a push together connector in the loom ,i do belive when i had the prob it was the fob not working and nothing to do with the system. as i have no knowledge of such things to do with imob/alarm systems i cannot help sorry . one idea to get the car running ,are you with the rac/aa if so give them a call they may be able to side step the imob/ alarm system at least this will let you use the car . if not with them join with the home start at least they may have the equipment to test the system and there expert knowledge is for free realy after the membership fee has been payed . this car is the first i have had with this type of system fitted and if i could iwould rip it out they are too much bother realy .when it goes wrong its a nightmare

Hi,
I think there is some confusion over the key switch on this alarm, it does not turn the alarm off, it only silences the siren.

yes i guess that the alarm is in with the imob system . but as these systems seem to cause so many problems how easy or hard is it to bypass the whole kit a caboodle and mabey fit an after market one . as it seems that merc want an arm and a leg to repair or even replace componants . my insurance company seems not to rate factory fitted systems but if i had something like a thatchem system for instance they seem to be more impressed and offer a bigger discount when i spoke to them to arrange my cover they asked about security and one of the questions was is it just the factoy fitted system gona have a word with a mate of mine see if he can shed any light on the removal or bypass of the system he is a car electonics/electrics whiz kid

The systems fitted to this era were Thatcham approved (cat 1 i believe) , i have a link somewhere to some info i,ll try and find it.
My insurance company even recognised this system as being so, though they did ask me if the original system was still fitted and working correctly.

w202 immobilizer

Hi, I have a 1998 c180. My car recently has been having trouble and reading the forum sounds like an immobiliser issue.

It starts the engine and the dashboad lights up but limits the speed of the car/throttle.

This happens now and again, would appreciate help

Help w202 immobilser issue

Hi,

got your email from the MB Forum I was wondering if you can help me......

I have a 1998 c180 w202, car runs fine but sometimes when I turn the key the engine starts fine dashboard lights up fine - when I drive it the car gives limited throttle response i.e

cant go over 10mph. I think the yellow abs light switches on but if I get out and leave it after a few hours everything works fine.

Im worries if it doesn't start in an emergency, would trash the car but purchased from knew so a bit attached to it.

AA man said its something to do with the immobilizer and the key. purchased new batteries for fob but still have the problem.

as Malcolm. definitely NOT an immobiliser fault.

i think you would be best to get it to a mercedes independent specialist (indie) to get the codes read on their STAR diagnostic machine

C180 2000 Elegance key fob immobilizer issue

Hi all :).

If there's no one here who can sort this out for me than I'm scrapping my beauty :(

1. Parked car at Uni car park - went inside for dinner then returned
2. Key fob suddenly died - no unlock/lock and when I used metal key to open door, when inserted fob into ignition barrel, nothing - absolutely nothing - can't even turn and the panel remains unlit. Only the time and mileage etc come up as they always do for a few seconds when doors open close.
3. Thinking it might be fob battery so replaced them. (can see red light blinking at lengthy intervals)
4. Checked car battery and it's perfectly alright.
5. I'm in York and there's only one MB dealer and others can't seem to help asking to take to MB dealership.
6. Dealership asking for a mind blowing unbelievable 1,000! Sterling not Dollars!!
7. Car still stood there as told RAC to go back as can't simply afford them to take car to MB dealership :)
8. I'm desperately looking for help.

Can someone respond quick enough? :)

Thanks in advance
Ron

It could be the key failed. Do the headlamps turn on and stay on.

Thanks for the super quick response.

The lights work fine. Checked the battery yesterday and was showing 14.7. The guy said it's not battery fault.

Headlights turn on and stay on. Should I disconnect battery and then connect?

I doubt that it will fix anything, do point your key into a camera and see if you can see a beam, you can try it with your TV remote so you know what you are looking for.
