Your solution would be to go to the main dealer, guaranteed to sort out your problem but lots of parts will be replaced in the process so will cost loads. If you own a Mercedes in my opinion you have to be prepared to "pay" to have it repaired or to get your hands dirty and repair it yourself.

Rajinder, you must be doing a lot of town running, I got 420 on run till warning light first came on, about 380 if not doing any significant runs..

Its all around town...... and how did you manage 380???? thats real good for a C180, mine is 11 years old though with around 120k on the clock..

Wouldn't white smoke be water from a head gasket failure and blue smoke from a worn engine using oil ?
I would be inclined to think thick white smoke (not steam) indicated a lot of oil being burned.
I think a leaky head gasket can manifest itself in several ways. Blue smoke could also be poor mixture.
If you stick stick some lube oil in your petrol you could try for yourself if your willing to experiment.
Burning lube also has a distinctive smell.

When I sold it it had 203,000 on clock. Sold it to my brother in law who has run it wth no probs since last october, except a corroded petrol tank filler pipe.
Not sure how many he has put on, but it is still on original clutch.

Just checked my fuel consumption, and on variable running ; motorway at 80mph,short runs and city driving ; my 1995 C220 auto returned 26.884 mpg which I think is ok considering it's a pretty heavy lump.

c180 1997 fsh 85k

I have a c180 1997 with 85k on the clock.

I have only had it a month - and when I first bought it, I was filling up with ordinary unleaded (95 octane), which made the car run lumpy and returned next to nothing in term of fuel economy.

I have since been filling up with sainsburys super unleaded (97 octane), and recently filled the car up to full, drove from folkestone to heathrow and back again on quarter of a tank.

The car runs far better and better mpg. The filling up with super unleaded was a recommendation from this site.

:D
