Some had them just to the left looking at the engine, behind the alternator, late cars deleted, and you have to do it by measurement

Malcom,

I think that I may have found the locations of the dipstick locations for both the engine oil and the ATF, but I am not sure. Both are near the bulkhead, LH side, looking from the front. The one that I think is the engine oil, comes off, remnants of engine oil on it, but there is no dipstick, its like a plug/bung.

The other loction will not come off, and has the inscription "workshop Only" marked on it. Could this be the ATF dipstick location. I have taken a picture of both. I tried posting the picture, but for some reason, can't get it to upload.

Tried to remove No. 2 for the G/box, will not budge. Is it just a matter of giving it more force ? Also, can I purchase a dipstick from MB to fit in its place after removal ?

That's what I am worried about. I accidently broke the clip off, while pulling on it. (This may be visible in the pictuere) Is this a cause of concern, or should it make removal of the cap easier ?

And that drawing package is great. I have saved it on my pc. Thanks.

To remove it you need to beak off the peice you already have broken off. Then the remaining clip can be pushed in with a screwdriver and then the cap will pull off. When they are replaced a new "red" clip is available from mb. 50p from memory. They are called "a red locking tab for the gearbos dipstick"

Without wanting to hijack the thread, where can I buy a universal dipstick (as I have two cars), do MB sell them?

To remove the pin just push it down with a screwdriver, you can use it again :D

Edit> Opps, just read Olivers post, sorry.

BlackC55, Ian, Television, others,

Thanks for the advice on removing the clip and plug. I am in the process of ordering the replacement parts now. Pin P/N 1409910055, Cover P/N 1402700091, and just in case, o Ring seal P/N 0229972248.

Dipstick P/N 1401521...is this for the v6 petrol ATF ? Can you tell me the full P/N. This does not come up on the MB parts page. I would like to order this also.

Thats the number I have just got from my dipstick and is the full number. The MB parts page may not list it as it is a workshop tool. Go into a dealer and buy it.
