Water pump impellors have been known to break down and no longer pump. Some of the new ones are plastic!!!

Duo valve may not be opening properly allowing hot coolant into heater system.

Viscous fan may not be operating causing the over heating.

Head gasket may have gone but very very unlikely on these engines.

Hope this helps

Yes there can be problems with the water pumps where the impeller stops, and no circulation once that happens

thanks for replies... i'm hoping it is the pump. when i got home i found the radiator was cold apart from top corner near top hose. i don't think its the thermostat otherwise the heater would be nice & hot. also if it was head gasket trouble i would expect there to be extra pressure in the cooling system... tomorrow will tell. is it possible to check the impeller without removing the pump such as reaching down the water outlet ? thanks again shaun

well i removed the water pump & found the plastic impeller had broken in 2 & fallen off so i was very happy. fitted new pump, antifreeze etc ... everything ok now. luckily i wasn't on the motorway when it went otherwise i could've wrecked the engine... the new pump has a metal impeller. thanks for everyones advice shaun

Good work young man, so pleased that you are all sorted, It brings the best in forums out into the open, with what can be done for minimal cost.
