Going to check my caravan Brake Drum Shoes and discover its what they call a Euroaxle which means No split pin on the Hub Nut but a one time fit /one shot only self locking nut, which when refitted has to be torqued up to 290 Nm or 214lbs ft + or - 3%
so;
1 I first need to get myself a 36mm Socket presumably a hex impact socket is the best choice
2 with that torque will a half inch drive be ok or should i be looking at 3/4 drive ?
3 what sort of length breaker will i need to get it off ? or is my 240V machine mart impact driver likely to be able to remove it
4 will i be able to to get a torque wrench that accurately can do this at a worthwhile cost ( probable use = twice ) or should i just tighten it up and roll round to my caravan dealer and get them to torque it up ( prearrange of course - its about 3mls away)

all advice appreciated
Boyd

most torque wrenches only go up to about 220NM so I think id either ask your caravan place to torque it tight (if they even bother and don't just wind it up tight) or just 'best guess' it by feel from when you undo it (assuming you are fitting a new nut and not just putting some threadlock on the axle to lock the nut, in which case just mark the position of the nut)

obviously you CAN buy torque wrenches (and torque amplifiers) for such jobs, but for a one or 2 use item, its not worth spending the money, IMO

looking at torque wrenches its not going to be economic but I would still like to undo to inspect the brake shoes it looks like a 3/4 hex socket is best given the force ,so thats now ordered ( sealey ) just wondering about the breaker to undo might as well get a 3/4 breaker possible a draper expert which extends to 770mm ie 2.5 feet could always add a scaffold pole to it:D

Have you got a friendly local garage that could lend you a v large torque wrench for an hour or overnight for a deposit and a few quid

No its an Oval squeezed thread First worry is just getting the thing off
Good idea about borrowing a torque wrench rather than that i think tighten it up as much as i can then roll it round to a local garage and pay or bribe them to torque it up maybe beer money in cash

An HGV repair shop will definitely have a torque wrench big enough. Beer tokens and job done.

You need a scafold pipe on the end of an good spanner to get them off .And yes they are throw away nuts after used once .Done a few of these in the caravan trade . Every service this had to be done to get to the brakeshoes and check and repack the bearings with grease .

I am wondering what??????? needs 214ft lbs of torque????? most wheel bearings are nowhere near that its adjust until the bearing play or end float is correct therfore cant be squeezing the bearings with that torque, and its not required to stop the wheel falling off so what the f**k is it required for ????????? - to make sure we go to a dealer ????

think thats two contact ball bearings built into one twin end bearng outer race with spacer that you clamp up tight tight. not a traditional taper roller? post pic of bearing

Ref ALKO: "Maintenance of Euro-Plus/EuroCompact and Euro-Delta. The above semi-trailing axles come fitted with maintenance free wheel bearings (greased and sealed for life) and no adjustment is necessary." ................have'nt we heard that before with Merc & BMW autoboxes Life in Human terms is somewhere around the Mid 70's so presumably my bearing will last that long without any maintenance

Our service depot sliped up one day on a service , and the costomer lost a wheel on his way home. They gave the service man the sack over it .Cost the company £5000 .After that , every job gets inspected by one of his co workers , and as to sign to say he checked it after work was done . I was lucky my c/van had a nut and a cotter pin . Last new van i had was in 2000 4 wheel Bailey Pagent 2000..Dont have one now ..

One day i was delivering a new Avondale .I was on the motorway .For some reason i thought i saw someone with a gun on the bridge , as i passed under it .Thought nothing more about it .But i was asked to go and pick it up ,,and bring the van back some days after . I was later told by the chap in the service depot that it was returned because it had this hole going through the one side [offside] of the caravan .On inspection it came in through the wall of the van through the wadrobe and in to the kitchen cabinet . It was shot by the chap i saw on the flyover . Just a piece of lead no marks on it ,, it was damaged to bad to say just what it was.
