I would prefer higher profile tyres, given the state of our local roads, and would consider swopping to smaller wheels to do this. Anyone know the approximate cost of replacing 4 C class alloys?

Normally plenty on EBay, the wheels you have will sell for more than the ones that you want to buy. You must use MB wheels with an ET number the same as is on your car.

I tried to fit a set of 16" CLK alloys to a 2003 W210 E class with 17" and the bolts from the E class (14mm) wont fit the CLK rims (12mm)

Check before you buy.
