What can I use to clean the steering wheel? Obviously I don't want to make it all slippery.
I've tried a damp cloth with warm water but it just makes the dirt flake off and make more mess.

Human grease is dissolvable with washing up liquid or soap as trambuca says:D

To clean my ivory colour three piece suite the tab recommends Lux soap flakes in warm water make a foam with a sponge "don't soak the leather" agitate in circular motion, rinse with clean warm water dry with lint free cloth.
Did the wheel which is black and the "crap" that came off  ,and it leaves the leather nice and soft back to new feel.

Use one of those magic sponges, you will be amazed I guarantee it! It will make the leather back to the original matte finish after removing the grease etc

Those magic sponges will also remove scratch marks from plastic (glovebox lids, dash's, door grabs etc), if they aren't too deep. And only a quid or so. Always test a small (unseen) area first as they are abrasive (something like 5000 grit W & D equivalent).

On my old car I recently used upholstery cleaner and a nail brush. It removed all the shininess and grease and it came up like new.

I need to do the same on the Merc but I'm worried about damaging the leather.

However there are white patches on the steering wheel - at first I thought it was the colour worn off but I now realise it is ladies hand cream!

I think I am going to follow the same process as my old steering wheel and hope for the best.

Use Baby wipes first, they are gentle
