CLK 200 Soft Top
Hi All,

I've had my CLK from new for just under 6 months.
But now I've noticed that the water is not beading on the soft top roof anymore so I guess it needs re-sealing?

I'm new to 'soft tops' so not sure whats involved and really don't want to make a hugh costly mistake. And boy, is there some variety of advice on the net!

So please can someone here offer some information on the best way of re-sealing it. Would it be better to take it to MB or a bodyshop or do it myself etc etc.

Its not leaking but the water isn't beading as it did when I first had it. And winters coming.

Many thanks,

Paul.

We have bought the Autoglym which I think does the same job, you can pick that up in Halfords.

Our only problem is getting a dry day to do the roof. I think you are supposed to clean the roof first, let it dry, which isn't easy this time of year, then put the second product on

I haven't noticed what the top of our car is doing when it's wet, but I have to say I don't recall noticing water sitting in droplets, so perhaps it needs doing

Lyn, with the Autoglym you don't have to wait until the roof is dry from cleaning before reproofing - I used to use it on my MGF............I just used to use a towel to dry up some of the moisture then spray the reproofer on, although it is best to let that dry.........then is beads up lovely ;) (just make sure you clean it off your paintwork and windows - its a b**ch to get off once dry!)

Thanks for that advice Lisa :D I did offer to do the car myself but was told firmly 'stay away from that car, don't touch it, you will ruin it'

We are talking about the roof, not the wheels

Yes Malcolm :D

I just thought I would save Keith some time by offering to do whatever needs doing to the roof, I guess he doesn't trust me. Mind you knowing me I could make a complete mess of it

I'm having my CLK soft-top re-sealed at present (dealer is doing it for free because I only purchased the car recently and I kicked up a fuss that it was leaking within first week of me owning it). They told me they could only carry out the work when the top is completely dry so make sure you do it on a dry day!

I would advise that you wait until the CLK roof is completely dry before re-sealing as I used to own an MGF and the soft-top is only 1 layer and so easier to dry than the complex and much more insulated CLK.
