Hi all,

I have recently bought a 2000 (pre 2000 model) C200 sport petrol. Unfortunately it has quickly developped a noticable clonk coming from somwhere at the back of the car when I accelerate from very low speed.
It almost sounds like it is coming from the boot area, I have checked and battery, spare wheel and all the kit seems to be secured.

My initial thoughts are suspension - how can I check the condition of the rear bushes?;
also on my list could be the prop shaft has some slack (although there is no noise if I accelerate when I am in 3rd gear for instance - hence I think it's suspension).

The thing I find strange is that it very much sounds like it is something loose moving about when I accelerate...

Any idea?
Thanks in advance

I am new to this forum (and to Mercedes as well...) so sorry if this question has been asked before. I have had a look thru' previous posts.

Check that you can't replicate the noise whilst the car is stationary. Bounce it up and down hard.

First suspects would be exhaust mount failure leavingyou with a swaying exhaust.

Broken spring.

I suppose that you could try checking for slack in the bushes by rocking the car back and forth with the hand brake on.

Hello and welcome

Jack the car in P and parking brake off, by turning the lifted rear wheel in both direction you should hear if it is a drive shaft problem

thanks guys,

driving it this morning I am now nearly convinced it is something to do with the springs (not seating on the platforms correctly? broken?). I'll have a good look at the week end.
Just thought I'd ask in case it was a well known problem

I have a similar problem with my 97 C180. The noise sounds clonky and rattly coming from the rear driver side wheel. Very annoying. I have had it checked by three different garages who could not tell what it is. They checked for movements in the suspensions and other bits that may cause the noise but to no avail. If this is a common problem I would appriciate it if a member told me where to look.

Many thanks

Ben,

Have you tried all the bits outside the car, trims and skirts around rear etc

Cheers

MrBen, I hope you have resolved your problem. Sorry to post here. I didn't think it a good idea to open a new thread. My problem as I have just discovered is the shock absorber not being fitted properly. I suspect it might be to do with the rubber and washer on the top of the shock inside the boot. I have put more washers under the big washer to cushion it more and tightened the bolt. It has greatly reduced the noise but not completely.

Now I have tried to find a diagram of the top of the shock to see if what is fitted on mine is correct but to no avail. So I would appreciate it if a good member here would advise/link. Its a c 180 manual 1997.

Many thanks.
