It's prob the reason the 204 and 207 etc etc have the joint the other way now........

aren't they a McPherson strut set up like the 203? or have they gone back to a 190-esque set-up?

Gutted for you Col, the only consolation I suppose is that it happened at a low speed and you weren't hurt.

Best of luck with getting it all back together and your bits are available. :D

Cheers Dave, prob the reason I got out laughing, 5 miles later I would have been on the M11!!!!!!!!!

They have gone back to using a 210 looking joint but upside down Pete..........

its not quite as simple as all that. on paper, the play should show up easily when jacked up correctly. the problem is that the 'cups' the ball joint sits in (for want of a better description) fill with rust, masking the play, so they seem fine until 'BANG'

IF (and its a huge 'if' and would possibly only happen in dry climates) you had a joint with NO rust and sufficient wear, the play would be easily felt (IIRC unlike McPherson strut set-ups where the wheel is checked hanging loose for free play in the joints, this type of set up has to be checked 'under compression' ie jacked up under the suspension arms so the suspension remains in its 'normal' position, for the free play to show up)

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on this, and the info is aimed at those who may not already know this. ive come across MOT testers that didn't (or claimed they didn't) know this! (its in the testers manual, or was when I did the course many years ago!)

I think the only way you'd feel it when jacked up would be to remove the forces on the ball joint. Jacking at the end of the arm (or under the spring) would accomplish this and enable any free play to be felt. I think as long as there is force on the joint any play will be masked.

Sorry guys, can we keep the thread about its title, open to start a new thread if you wanna discuss ball joints etc.......

The set up on this car is nearly the same as a 124, and the same thing can happen, so much rust forms in the joint the play cannot be felt.

Yes that ramp, a dream to have, I am past crawling around on the ground now

Some bits done

Got the bits back from the blasters this morn, come back nice.......

New shocks turned up as well along with the new top mounts...

New lower arms also come in this afternoon

Started to clean up the lower hangers, long slow job even with the tools we have. having to do it in small stages due to time, its getting the underseal off which is the killer.......

Left it tonight with rust killer on the bare metal, just gotta keep picking t it....

Got first coat of smooth finish on some of the items, front roll bar and hangers are out being powered coated so they will be a couple of days, new back plates are due in tomorrow from MB and new bolts, front end items nearly complete ready for refitting once the hangers and frame arms have been painted......
