has anyone de cat a w211 e270 2003 cdti ?. any advice welcome please as considering trying to find some garage to do so. I am not completely sold on the idea but some of said yes, and some no. I do have what sounds like an exhaust rattle underneath, if I slow right down to crawling pace it just comes in then goes, only on deceleration and not all of the time, cant see under that it is loose or sign of vibration, performance good, and nothing showed on recent re-map. ???

If it’s the rattling annoying you, a well placed dent in the box...

don't do it. the world is polluted enough without your help. I am fully expecting the penalties for removing CATs and DPFs to be significantly increased.

Only applies to cars from 2009 onwards.

You have 2 KATs on the diesels, top and bottom, I have removed the top KAT's when they break up. I wouldn't remove one, just to make it louder.

On some cars that have 2 kats it makes no difference to the emissions. The old V6s and V8s petrols had quad KAT's and the top ones were always breaking up, they used to get removed and then still pass the MOT emissions the same as it did with both fitted.

On the OPs car I would likely think he has a heat shield loose.

My ML270 developed a rattling cat (secondary). Very annoying. Tried to dent it - no go. Removed it (legally) and it was too noisy. Replaced it with a resonator (straight through small muffler) and it now has a nice note. Seems our laws here allow one to be removed but not both.

Apart from an increase in exhaust note, and the smell, Nothing too bad to concern you. You might gain a few horses. Get away with it while you can.

From an environmental perspective, I think the G8 Summit and Euro tree huggers need to look at air and sea travel and other heavy plant industry that do far more damage to our fair planet rather than picking on a certain car owners who decide to have the KATs removed from their cars or not.

Especially when you consider that all the filtration systems fitted to cars before the bucket of pigs urine became the way to clean DPFs were invented, meant that it caused the engine to use more fuel in its regen procedure, often used diesel injected into the DPF to ignite and burn off excess ash and KATs produce high levels of mustard gas before they hit 150'c anyway. So any net gains in "clean air" are completely reversed by the process.

Its a complete hogwash.
