Diesel smoke tester

Just out of interest I fixed a faulty diesel smoke tester today for my local garage. All that happens is that there is a light tube that fills with the exhaust gas,and with a lamp one end and a sensor the other, it measures the light output at the sensor end, and then prints out the reading. I was disapointed that it was so simple.
