To conclude this I bought a patten replacement heated but non dimming mirror glass from eBay for £20. It fitted fine, is much better than the brown stained original and the heated glass works as it should. I can live without it not automatically dimming.

Mine has also developed an amber tint but I haven’t noticed any issues with it in use.
