Gents,

This is my first posting but I've been a member for some years. It has been a fascinating read and very helpful too, thank you all.

I hope this posting is in the right section as the work done covers all aspects of the car. I know there have been others brave / mad enough to undertake this project and have posted on this matter but I wanted to give something back as the previous posts seemed to give much enjoyment or amusement to many members.

Here we go....a bit of background first.

The car in question is a 2000 320CDI Elegance estate (silver) and was bought by my father from Watford MB in 2003 with 22,000 mls on the clock. It took my parents many times to southern Spain and was my first experience of the famed MB comfort and CDI grunt. I caught the bug so in 2010 I purchased a 56 plate E class 211 320CDI AG saloon from MB with 36,000 mls. I still own it and its now covered 145,000 mls having been lovingly cared for (both MB and Indy specialist) ever since. Its not been cheap but it is a very lovely car which I've taken all over europe at some very european speeds !

My father ceased driving in early 2012 and the 210 came to me....

Although it had been regularly serviced it needed TLC and also suffered from the usual rust in the usual places. 2 new front wings, a lick of paint on the tailgate, two new MB headlights, partial leather recolourisation and a service got the car back into reasonable condition. At this stage it had around 98,000 mls on the clock. Nothing at all for the 320 CDI.

Late in 2012 unplanned domestic upheaval resulted in me loaning the car to the wife. Over the next 5 years it was serviced by a local indy but lacked my more particular attention. Only used for local journeys (not a good thing). During this period the main non wear and tear items addressed were new rear shocks, new front discs and pads, welding under the boot floor and a couple of breakdown issues which I can't recall.

Step forward to summer 2017. The car has now covered ONLY 107,000 mls. I reclaim the vehicle. Its obvious it needs a lot of attention and my ocd approach to give this beast a new life. Much soul-searching and research on this site was done. The rust, the springs, a money pit etc. The still LOW mileage, my Dad's last car (he passed on in 2014), the practical estate compared to my 211 saloon. Mmmmmm. Agony.

I took the beast to my local specialist who covered the areas of need, then those of desirability. Much work required but overall given positive review, given what could have been.

Taking the risk of being referred to the local doctor for obvious madness, I decided to keep the car and invest (!) in the future rather than flog it to a local builder who would run it to its inevitable death and scrap it. This car deserved a better fate than (for the obvious reasons) many of the remaining 210s are now or will soon suffer.

The car was deposited with the specialist in late July 2017 and remained with him until last week. Much work has been undertaken. Much has been spent, more than I originally hoped. But once committed I had to stick to the path. No other choice. I will shortly list the work done so far. You may well wince, I certainly have. The vast majority of the mechanics are now done. Last week it went to my friendly local bodyshop. All areas will be addressed which I will list in due course. A titbit for now is I'll be fitting 2 new front panels, a new tailgate and a load of body parts (e.g. new front grill) bought from MB.

I hope to get the car back in 2-3 weeks, looking suitably amazing, and then it will be back to the specialist for a coupe of smaller items (e.g. new battery, new steering wheel buttons). At that point I really hope I will be done for now...fingers crossed.

So more to come in due course. There will be some on here who think I'm crazy and some who know I am. But, for all the reasons above, I just couldn't let it go. I have not spent the money expecting a return. I have spent the vast sums to bring my Dad's beast back to life which I can then use as a practical luxury car myself. I only hope that at the pearly gates of heaven St Peter is a 210 lover and will look kindly upon my efforts to save this 210 from death and it gives a modicum of joy to those in the know when they see a good looking 210 going past them !

Regards to all,

Timelord

The 210 IL6 Cdi certainly gets under your skin, if I could I would have bought a new one to replace the old. I still have mine and I like to think it earns its keep and it still drives well

Look forward to hearing what you have had done hopefully with some pics

I'm selling mine, 52 plate, a nice one with the Brabus D6 box, after doing lots to it.

Also got lots of spares cheap, if you need bits, Timelord.

All,

A quick update on my last post.

The car is still in with the bodyshop and it doesn't look like I'll be getting it back before the end of November. They are slow and overworked but they'll do a good job and we can haggle over the price once its finished.

Before the car went into the workshop the following work was carried out by my regular specialist ;

New (Merc) rear shocks fitted. The old ones were non merc and had failed after only 2 yrs.
New rear bushes.
New rear springs.
New thermostat.
New cam sensor.
New crank sensor.
New Air Mass Sensor.
New exhaust box and pipe to front end.
Brake switch replaced.
Fuel lines / front pump replaced.
Aircon service / re-gas.
"A" service carried out.
ATF flushed.
Centrole console dash bulb replaced.
All 4 alloys refurbished.

I'll give more details later, but this wasn't cheap.

Then I went to Mercedes in preparation for the next stage at the body shop and bought ;
New Mercedes star.
New chrome grill.
New bumper body parts for both front and back N/S and O/S.

and a New tailgate ! (Expensive)

Whilst in the bodyshop the car will have 2 new front wings, the tailgate and be attended to virtually everywhere else (doors, rear arches, roof, bonnet etc etc).

Then it will get a full valet to get all the dust and marks off and then back to my specialist for new steering wheel buttons :) and a new battery (the current one isn't merc spec and is under voltage on STAR). I might need a refurb Audio 10 headunit as well but thats just a cosmetic issue so we shall see.

I do hope at that point to have a fully sorted, reliable and lovely 210 ready to pay back some of the many thousands this will have all cost !

Keep you posted....

Sounds like an extensive refurb and I’m sure you will reap the benefits when done. As you say it’s nice to be in a position to keep these great cars on the road. I’m currently working on the rear wheel wells on mine the driver’s side is particularly bad and needs refabrication which is proving interesting.

Look forward to seeing some pics when finished

Great thread, looking forward to some piccys.

Odd about the rear rams failing after 2 years.
The OEM is Sachs with no alternatives that I've heard of.

Was the tailgate that far gone? Wouldn't it be cheaper to repair and paint a used one?

Excellent thread, can't wait to see the pics!

Hi Guys,

Hopefully you can see the images above and expand them at your leisure.

The car is still with the bodyshop but as you can see it is well on the way to completion and looking fab ! Bonnet has been taken down to bare metal. New merc front wings and tailgate to be fitted and painted. Roof will be given full attention too. I'm sincerely hoping that the tailgate window can be saved and transferred to the new one for the obvious reasons of cost.

Tailgate ended replacing as the old one had been previously worked on and had now gone too far to save this time. I looked around the web for 2nd hand replacements but all those I saw were 1) Not particularly cheap and 2) had signs of the same rust issues. As always its the rust you can't see so I decided to avoid the risk and go brand new. It would have been so disappointing to import similar problems from another car and pay for the privilege at the same time !

Overall the bodyshop reported that the car was in good nick once it had been stripped down apart from NSR arch which had been repaired by an idiot. Basically the dents etc had been just covered with filler without any attempt to straighten up beforehand. Amazing what lurks beneath.

Cant wait to see it finished, hopefully by the end of the month. Then back to the specialist for a new battery and steering wheel buttons. No doubt some tuning / fettling thereafter....

More soon, if you can stand the wait LOL.

Just read this thread, I too have the restore bug but with my W202, I'd love a W210 but love my W202 way too much. Reading this thread though so far, looking forward to your updates. Like mentioned previously, other vices and money pits are available. I don't drink smoke or have any women in my life so it all goes into my car.

Best of luck and will be watching this thread.

All,

The beast is finally back !!!!!

After much patience it finished it's journey at the bodyshop earlier this month. Then it was back to my Merc specialist for a new MOT and the items I have specified earlier. Unexpected pleasures were it now needed a new rear window regulator. To cheer myself up the drivers window regulator was also replaced as it was past it's best. Despite attempts at a clean-up of the old one a new EGR valve was required so was fitted (at exorbitant cost). It then flew thru the MOT and was returned to me.

Looks absolutely fab and the first time I could drive it since this process was started back in Aug 2017. Very happy ! I decided that the best thing for it was an elongated italian tune-up so I took it away on business to Telford. A round trip of nearly 500 miles. I'm happy to report all went well and it was very happy keeping up with the rest of the traffic in the outside lane.

Only two things arose - the drivers electric seat didn't work (at all) and the horn sounded naff. So upon my return it went straight to my local Merc dealership. It also meant I knew they would have a good crawl all over it to see if they could could any more business...

The electric seat just needed a new relay fitted and now works perfectly. The horns are past it so will be replaced later this week and will return the sound to the proper volume ! After giving it the once over I daresay they were disappointed that further work was not identified. Ha !

Yesterday it got valeted by my usual guy who spent several hours on the interior getting rid of the evidence of 5 months in the bodyshop, feeding the leather seats etc and a good clean up of the outside.

I have to say I'm very pleased. It looks almost brand new and runs very well (fingers crossed). I've had quite a few admiring looks driving along already. It is fair to say that (especially on motorways) you don't see that many on the road anymore and those that are tend to look very sorry for themselves and are nearing the point of no return. This one - my father's one - has been saved. It has not been cheap but to see it now, I feel proud to own it.

I hope you enjoy the pictures. In due course I may give further details on the expenditure - for now let's enjoy an S210 given a second chance which will hopefully take it far past the 18 years it has been with us already since production back in 2000.

Fantastic story and looks superb.
I have a very nice W202 C280 and I'd like it to look as good as the Op's 210. One day maybe.

Hi everyone. A quick update on the S210. Its only been used sparingly since coming back from its restoration but I've still put around 4000 miles on it since March. All is well and its lovely. The only work needed has been a replacement courtesy light under the drivers door that had come lose and new rear spheres.

During the resto I replaced the non-genuine rear shocks for the proper merc self levelling shocks as considerable expense. However the ride didnt feel 100% and got to the stage where it was like sitting on an old London bus - bounce, bounce ! After a bit of research I concluded that the most like culprit would be the rear spheres. This was confirmed by my indy mech who stated the originals were still on the car. New ones fitted now and the car is back to the smoothness you would expect. Relief !

I certainly wont be using it during periods where the roads have been salted as i don't want to accentuate the return of the dreaded rot but apart from that it will be used regularly. Nothing really needed on it currently :( although I may give the drivers seatbelt a good wash to see if the retraction strengthens a bit and I could be tempted with a new heater blower motor at some point (mine seems to surge at times rather than keep a constant speed).

Best.
