Wow you did so well to achieve that MPG. Especially in reverse gear! Haha

Mine is averaging 47mpg although much of my driving is in London traffic. I am very tempted to switch the wife's GLC to one with this engine. But the cost to change is going to be ridiculous so haven't yet looked at it.

Hi guys. How is new om654 comparing to 3.0 v6 diesel? Is it nearly smooth and no vibrations as v6?

I went from the V6 to to OM654, I didn’t notice it was down on power compared to the V6 (even though it is) and didn’t notice any vibrations. From outside you could tell it was diesel but rarely on the inside (cold start first thing and no radio on). You could also only tell it was changing gear by the Rev counter dropping and the gear indicator. Massively improved from the 7G box.

If it's not rattly and noisy like old 220/250cdi, there is no more need for 3.0 in my opinion. I have the e350 v6 diesel coupe and i'm considering to buy new E coupe (c238) but in Croatia i have to pay approximately £10.000 import taxes for 3.0 engine and for 2.0 maybe £4000 because of the Co2. I always thought that 2.0 engine is not for cars like E class or bigger. If 220d om654 is smooth like people say + remap on cca 240ps and 500torque it would be enough. It is a very hard decision for me.

Completely agree with this. There is just no need for the 3.0 anymore (they don't make V6 now I believe it is inline 6 now). I have been a big advocate of V6 engines forever! However, with the new 4 pot I am just so impressed. Yes - so smooth and powerful and as a bonus you get the economy. You also lose the lag which I had on the last V6 that I had, instant power from first push of the pedal.

Having said that, I am have not yet driven the new inline 6...maybe I shouldn't!

The reviews of the 400d are extremely complimentary. I am itching to try one.

Powerful and unbelievably economical (well mine was).
Simplex chain so long term reliability is something to be aware of no doubt. Probably still a bit new to hear of failures, only seen one issue on a 9G box on the forum (so far...)
No chain problems yet as it only drives a gear that drives both cams BUT we are seeing a lot of cam follower/rocker bearing failures.

Oh dear. How expensive is that issue to repair?

Not that bad, unless you ignore the noise, then new cams and carrier is needed. Currently on back order for a month.

Oh, yes, please. We think it would potentially make a great tow car with the standard tow bar.

C300d 2019 om654
I wish I’d seen this thread earlier. We live in Portugal (kids still in Kent), last year I decided to buy my first ever new car. After 18 months of analysis I went for the C300d Avantgarde (not available in the UK) rather than the AMG line. For me the decision was all about the engine. I haven’t been disappointed!! The car is everything I’ve ever wanted. The only downside is it’s slightly noisy at low revs but once you get going it has phenomenal performance from a 2L Diesel engine.

This is a timely thread!
Hi everyone :D
I’m coming back to the fold after too long away. I’m looking for an E Class estate and have a budget of £14-17K and this engine will be achievable in that range so I’m glad I happened by today.
