Any thoughts on the Merc Extended Warranty?
Bought my E Class at 2 1/2 years old and got the Approved Used warranty with it. Dealer (Harrogate) have been great and agreed to let the manufacturer warranty run then put the 12 months Approved on it. Other dealers said couldn't be done but they agreed. Week after purchase I get my letter saying warranty on for 12 months.
Harrogate Merc said no problem, they will add 6 months on. Fair play, they did and extended it until December meaning I got an additional 4 months almost.

Got the letter yesterday about extending the warranty with the Merc Extended one.

Anyone had any experience of it? Had a few things done on the Approved Used one but is the Extended one comparable? Seems to be a watered down version to me.

My son needs his car for work so always takes out the extended warranty and to be fair MB did look after him very well during the time he had his W213 - if you need a warranty and the price is acceptable the MB one is going to be much better than a third party scheme.

I don’t use any warranty schemes and put money aside to cover likely failures (as most do on here) but if I was running an EU6 diesel with ADBLUE I would certainly take out the warranty with MB providing it covered NOx sensors and the ABLUE system

It's £463 for 12 months, which I thought was ok but it looks to be lower than the original one. Main one being wear and tear failure excluded, whereas the original one covered failure due to wear and tear.

What is covered?
This warranty covers all factory-fitted mechanical and electrical parts (including labour costs) of the insured vehicle against sudden and unexpected mechanical or electrical failure.
This includes consequential damage (see below) to covered parts. Please see the general exclusions on pages 16 to17 for details of what is not covered.
This policy covers the following parts.
Alarm systems Factory-fitted alarms, or alarm systems that have been fitted according to the manufacturer’s specification at the time the insured vehicle was registered as a new car.
Casings These will only be covered if any of the covered parts fail and cause damage to the casings. Otherwise casings are not covered. Catalytic converters
Catalytic converters and diesel-particulate filters are covered for mechanical failure. This does not include cleaning fuel lines, filters, carburettors, and pumps or replacing catalytic converters if these have been damaged as a result of using contaminated or incorrect fuel or accidental damage. Consequential damage • We will pay for damage caused to a covered part if this is caused by another covered part. • Apart from casings (see above) we will not pay for any damage to parts not covered by this warranty, even if the damage is caused by a covered part.
High-voltage (HV) parts HV batteries, plug-in hybrid batteries, AC/DC on-board charger, invertor, HV coolant compressor, HV ECUs, HV line set, electric motor central power train controls (electrical), PTC interior heating and PTC battery heating.
In-car entertainment Factory-fitted audio-visual equipment or audio-visual equipment fitted by a retailer as part of the standard specification of the insured vehicle at the time it was first registered. Includes the COMAND, Becker Map Pilot, telephone equipment (not including the handsets) and satellite navigation system.
Working materials Oils, oil filter and anti-freeze are covered only if it is essential to replace them because of the failure of a part, which is covered under this warranty.

What is not covered?
Claims for mechanical or electrical failure of covered parts if the failure is due to wear and tear. Bodywork, body seals (including any convertible roof, boot, sunroof, doors and so on), fixings and fastenings (nuts, bolts, brackets, studs, clips and springs (other than suspension springs )), glass, interior and exterior trim, interior panels, paint, lamp units and wheels. Any failure that is caused by the insured vehicle overheating. This is not regarded as a mechanical failure under the terms of this insurance. Mercedes-Benz Extended Warranty. 15 We do not cover the following parts. • Air cleaners • Any seal, gasket or sealant • Auxiliary belts • Batteries - non-HV and auxiliary batteries • Bonnet, boot and fuel-flap release cables • Brake friction material and discs and drums • Brake pipes and brake hoses • Clutch assemblies, clutch fork, release bearings, pressure plate and carrier plate • Clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder • Core plugs • Distributor caps • Drive shaft and steering rack gaiters • Electrical connection blocks, terminals and fuses • Exhaust system, muffler, heat shields and exhaust pipes • Fuel filters • Gearbox, axle and drive line mountings • Handbrake and parking brake cables • Hinges • Hoses and pipes (non-metal), hose clips and connectors (not including coolant hoses) • HT leads • Light bulbs and LED bulbs (except xenon bulbs) • Navigation CDs, DVDs and SD cards • Oil filters and gaskets • PAS high-pressure hoses or pipes • Pollen and odour filters • Reprogramming or software updates unless these are needed as part of a repair to a covered part or will solve the complaint or fault. We will only pay for one hour's work • Shock absorbers and suspension struts • Spark plugs • Sunroof cables, convertible cables, convertible roof material and straps • Tyres • Wheels • Wiper blades • Wiring and wiring looms Claim payments We will pay any number of claims (including VAT) up to the maximum claim limit. We will not pay more than the manufacturer’s list price for parts and official labour times and costs which are necessary to repair or replace covered parts. When in continental Europe The warranty is valid for up to 60 days a year while your vehicle is in continental Europe.
MercedesBenz Warranty Services will not pay more than the equivalent UK cost for parts and labour.

What mileage is the car presently on I would imagine MB would struggle to argue not to pay a claim for any mechanical fault under 70k miles due to wear and tear? If your car is a diesel make sure all NOx sensors and ADBLUE components are covered these are big ticket items to replace and the failure rate has been fairly high. I remember my son’s car having the front lower suspension arms replaced under his extended warranty at circa 50k miles but nothing else

It's done 27,000. 4 and a bit years old. Mine had a drivers side lower suspension arm done on the warranty when it got serviced in August.

Yes it is diesel. Mate of mine has a 2018 identical model to mine and has just hit 105,000 miles without issue. It does say excludes exhaust system but this is a bit unspecific.

I'll give them a call.

The £463 is around 2.5 hours labour at the main dealer , without the cost of the part to repair whatever issue you may have.

IMHO for piece of mind i would go for it as pretty much any single repair at the MD will be more than the initial outlay , providing it is covered under their warranties T+C`s , plus any future issues within the warranty period will incur no further charges.

Mechanical parts or electrical components can give up at anytime , even from new and because a similar vehicle had no issues is no guarantee that yours wont , hopefully not though.

Clear as mud with the warranty company! Sales line say Nox and AdBlue classed as exhaust so exempt. Called the claims line and asked them and they say they're covered.

When you say warranty company are MB using a third party insurer now?

As regards Nox and ADBLUE cover you need it in writing MB are having a lot of trouble with those items

Suppose that would be the battle at the time. Why did it clog up.

They always have the 'get out of jail card' handy don't they!
It’s what the Mercedes warranty was very good at… almost no “it’s not covered”

What an admission of a lack of faith in their own design ability especially as there is (to my knowledge) no mention of maintaining the ADBLUE System in the vehicle handbook to avoid blocking of the urea injector

We have had 6 MB's in the last 20 years & did not have any extended warranty on any of the cars.
Repair costs in total have been well under £1,000, or £100 a year. I rest my case.

I sort of agree with your logic, that said I have today extended the warranty on my 2021 GLC for what I consider to be avery reasonable £432 for 12 months running from Jan 24.

My current car is my 4th Mercedes and the only outlay was for a rear shock absorber on my S212 which was a year out of warranty and Mercedes contributed 25%.

I can afford the bills for repairs out of warranty but the extended warranty just gives me peace of mind as after all it does not take much to go wrong for some bills to be quite expensive.

I would go down the road of questioning the lack of maintenance requirements if and when it came to it.

Got to be hard for them to turn down a claim on a system failing when there is no direction for prevention surely?

I've had 5 and spent very little on repairs. Last 2 (S212 and the current W213) had a few warranty claims on them for nothing major.

This is the first car I have had with AdBlue and it seems to be the most common issue.

You haven’t mentioned your usage of the car if you cover 12-15k miles per annum the urea in the ADBLUE tank won’t get chance to go stale and crystallise as it needs frequent topping up my son’s 220d never missed a beat between 18k miles (when he bought it) and 75k miles (when he sold it) with no hint of ADBLUE issues (he covered the above mileage)

Some on here use ADBLUE additives to stop crystallising but not sure how effective that is might be worth starting a thread. I remember topping my son’s car up with ADBLUE and I kept the empty container in the garage for a month when I next went to pick it up there were little ball bearing sized crystals rolling about inside tells you something

Think the warranty is worth having for the cost (£463 for 1 year or £805 for 2). Only one repair bill realistically.

Your car has already had a front bottom suspension arm replaced and in all probability the other side will need doing soon it appears to be a weak point other than that they are a very good car and drive well. If you are going to keep it a while oil changes <8k miles are well worth doing. I think my son’s comment about his reluctance to sell his sums the car up nicely he was concerned whatever he bought next wouldn’t be as good - enjoy the car it is a noticeable step-up from the S212
