Failed Key & Ignition switch on 02 Class

Hi, does anyone think what the MB dealer is telling me is plausible?

My 02 Class (220 CDI) was left for 2 weeks in an airport car-park. On our return car-park company could not start the car, the key opens the door, but will not turn the ignition.

The car-park people apparently tried to 'jump the car' incase the battery was low, but no difference.

Now the MB dealer tells me the key and the ignition unit have both failed, and it will cost 890 pounds......

I finding it difficult to believe both the key and ignition unit failed at the same time.

Has anyone had experience of this?

Thanks in advance

David

A key can fail and the ignition switch can fail but anyone that told me they failed together would have me calling them a liar.
The switch unit is around £400 (someone correct me) plus I'd guess £100 to fit and code. The old keys should work just fine as AFIAK the switch is factory coded to them.
Get a second opinion.

Yes As Jberks, the DAS lock is £450 and this has nothing to do with the keys

Edit not working.

Its worth disconnecting the battery for ½ hour to see if it will re set

Thanks.

I had asked the MB dealer to disconect the battery, but will double check they did it. The costs breakdown was 400 for the unit, 125 for the key and the rest labour, so at MB dealer hourly rates, probably 1 hour or so!

Thats all far too expensive and you do not need the key, there is nothing in the MB workshop manuals that says that the key needs to be replaced and it is the first time that I have heard of it

They say to replace the key too because some new ignition switches won't work with the old key.

Give it a good thump and see if it wakes it up. It often does.
