had an e-class avantgarde on test, and now hav my own - which I'm very impressd with.

However - on the test vehicle I seem to remember that the wing mirrors folded in automatically whenever I left the car - but I can find no reference to this in the manual, and mine don't - did I dream this, or is there some setting I can change to make it do it - seems a useful thing to do, as i don't always remember.

Mine is a 2003 model and they fold in. You can change the settings to make them fold in automatically by using the controls on your steering wheel to scroll through the settings on the dash computer.

Thanks - mine fold when I press the button, but can't find anything that sets them to fold automatically - I have COMAND so presumably there's a setting there somewhere?

That's one thing that I would like on my 99 SL, sure I can push the switch, may be I will do a mod. should be quite simple. When my best friend bought his new in 98 he had a mod done for the roof as well and it was all done on the key fob.

Use the Convinience menu

I have E avantgrade, around a year old. The mirros definitively fold. It is in one of the menus, think it is Convinience. Can only get in these settting menus when you are stationary and obviously the key in. Can also dip the kerb side mirror when reversing. I did not find it very useful.

If you can't find the menu, let me know and at the weekend I will find time to look for the menu and let you know.

Cheers

I have a vague recollection of a note sent to dealers informing them that this function had been disabled as customers complained about the noise it made.

i know its an SLK but on those you have to pay extra to get them to fold in!

maybes it was a cost option?

Odd, mine does it too and its from the convenience menu, but I've just flicked through the online manual and can find no mention of it. Surely MB's answer to the idiots that complain about the noise is to tell them to turn off this function - not to remove it altogether. Perhaps they'll stop making Diesels because mine is noiser than my old petrol V6?
I find it great, especially since the mirror on my 210 was belted in a carpark.

I've had my E 320 CDI estate for a week now and having read throught the brick (three times!) I've set my mirrors to fold in when I lock the car on the remote button. They don't make a noise but my brother's (also E320CDI) do....

They open out automatically when you onlock and open one of the front doors.

You can also do the close thing manually on the driver's side door buttons.

One week a MB owner and already an expert eh??

Cheers to all, Russ.

My mirrors also fold when i lock the car and fold back out when i open either of the front doors. I've also set my passenger mirror to automatically angle down when i select reverse, so i can see the kerb, and it resets back when i move forward or switch off, cool feature.

Interesting that with MB's you have to turn the nearside mirror down when reversing/parking, on my V70R I can see fine without moving them.

I can't seem to find the option in the menu on my W209 CLK although do have the button to fold the mirrors. I seem to remember a post somewhere saying this was not available on all models or something.

Could one of you who has mastered the menu system be good enough to provide the step by step instructions so that I can determine if I have this feature or not. I'd be very grateful, thanks.

I must say I find it hugely irritating that I can use most features on a Windows PC (not known for being intuitive exactly) yet Mercedes manage to make their menus, on a by comparison simple car, rediculously tortuous - and why are the manuals so badly written too?

AAAHHGRRR!

Just after doing my post on the folding mirrors, and after bragging about me being an expert, I went out in the car, stopped, locked it and only the passenger mirror folded in! Pride before a fall eh?

No matter what I do now, I cant get the D side one to fold - even using the door button. I've set the programming screen to fold them but only the N side one goes in. The D side one will adjust up/down and in/out on the buttons so it's not a complete power loss to the mirror.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Also a couple of you mention this N side fold down reversing aid that can be programmed to come on when you select (yes!) reverse. I can't see this in my scrolled screens. Is it an optional extra that I may not have?

One more query although this might need to be a seperate post - neither of my mirrors get warm for demisting. Is this a clever MB thing that the car only turns on when the temp drops below a predetermined temp? Or have mine just packed up?

Mine fold

Yep, same here, fold, unfold on opening door, dip on reversing. Noisy when folding and unfolding. However, a couple of weeks ago had to go through a tight spot in a street and could not possibly have done without folding the mirros.

OK mine is 2005 270 CDI Avant. What I have found is that if one of the functions stops working, take it off in the program, and after one switch off and on (cant remember if it was overnight), program again. Hey presto, this time it works!! Surely we are not going to find it in MB manual. Experience. With regards to the demisting, apparently it is more sophisticated. It comes on when low temp and mist is detected and thus if the side mirrors are wet but it is warm, demister would not come on.

Its called Parking aid, i think. it will be in the conveinece menu under settings. but you have to set your left hand mirror, then leave it on left hand selected. or it dont work. IE, if you fiddle with the right side mirror then try and set parkaid it wont move. or something. to be honest i have my mirros set so i dont use it and i find the movement on the mirror distracting when i reverse. and you have to start moving forward before it returns to normal positon. but thats my prefrenece.

yep. it has to reach a predetermined temp for them to come on. and i dont know what it is.

I'm struggling to find the whole convenience menu (mine's a new 280CDi AG). I press the menu thing till I get to settings, then up and down to get to the menu options - but I've only got interior lighting, vehicle and one other (can't remember, but it's not 'convenience'). The parking aid thing is referred to in the manual (but not auto folding) - but no sign of this convenience menu anywhere!

your comment about one mirror folding and the other not. I had this on mine, all I did was manually push the one that wouldn't fold back and the forward again (is if it were manual ... aaargh) and after that it worked fine. Something just gummed up in the works I guess
