clk 220 cdi sport
Hi guys,

First post here. Hope it's in the right place.

After test driving 2 CLK 220 CDI's at the same dealership, I left a deposit on the sport version I preferred. It's a 2007 model with loads of goodies fitted, 73K miles with fsh.

Here's the rub. On scrolling through the trip computer the display read an average of 20.6 mpg for the last 13,000 miles. That must be the last time the trip was reset. This figure can't be right , surely? The garage have said it wasn't and will check things out when they prepare the car for collection next week.

I've lost sleep worrying about this and possible causes for such a poor average mpg. Could this car have been chipped or retuned somehow ? I don't know if that is possible on this model. I did notice on the 2 test drives that this sport model seemed to pull much stronger than the other identical engined model.

Thanks for reading. Any input or thoughts would be most welcome.

Why not take the car on a run after resetting the trip fuel consumption in the cluster. It the car has only been doing very short stop start runs, then the consumption will not be that good.

there was a variation in the engine, IIRC around 2007 that upped power from 150 to 170bhp so that may have been the difference. as for 20mpg, as Malcolm has said already, unless sitting idling in traffic etc a lot, or running on an autobahn flat out, that sort of figure is near impossible from a 220cdi.

That's comforting to know.

Thanks for the replies.

BTW, Pete, is my model a W203 as I see you previously owned a C220i ?

Cheers

2005 CL500.
The cross over year for 203s and 204s was 2007.

The first three numbers of your VIN...that will tell you.

a clk will be a 209. the 203 refers to the chassis code on the c class i had. the 209 CLK is, essentially, a 203 C class under the skin so shares most of the mechanical components. my C220 CDi was an early 143bhp one, and i only once took it on the motorway and returned under 50mpg (i was taking my OH to the hospital when she was in labour so i wasnt taking it easy!) and there are photos on the site of a trip to sheffield when the display showed an average for the trip of over 70mpg!

Good point John. I never really took much notice of the other readouts I was so horrified at seeing 20.6 mpg, I will post up that figure if the dealer hasn't reset the trip.

Thanks for the model education Pete. I obviously have a lot to learn about Mercedes models and ownership, etc.

I trust you made it to the hospital on time with the OH. :)

Cheers

stop start traffic around Birmingham I’m not too surprised, when i go to the office from Newark to Birmingham (St Paul's Square) I'll get over 50mpg most of the way when i hit the M6 and then the Expressway it will drop to about 45 almost guaranteed.

Yes I agree. That's why I'm a bit worried about it.

Spoke to the dealer today ( mercland ) they will check the car before I collect it tomorrow. Reading another post on here mercland seem to have a good reputation.

Average speed is 12mph @ 20.6 mpg.

A couple of tanks full with Millers added,
some Italian tune up driving,
then take it for a good open road run at 70ish and then see what the consumption is on that run.

The 12mph average is the killer and if it has a DPF that'll be in a poor state by now.

If it's Jay at Mercland your dealing with then you really won't have much to worry about, they will check the car over well before handing it over to you.

Fuel consumption seems good on these C classes. That's why I got one, albeit a 2003 w203 sport coupe with I think 150 horses. Left my trip meter for last 20000 miles and it says average 53 mpg and ave 30ish mph.
Depends on how you drive of course, driven carefully I saw 65 mpg at 60 mph on one long journey.
Dont worry about it, just enjoy!

Long live cruise control.

Jay is a very good guy to deal with. If there was anything wrong and using too much it would be blowing smoke.

Spent 10k miles idling... As said it will need an Italian tuneup

Mine has shown 21mpg, stuck in traffic for an hour in the middle of winter... So it can be done on a 220cdi

I think it will need a tour of Italy :D
