Just been sent this photo by my son. His Ford KA went into have the clutch replaced. Garage called him and said the gearbox is broken.
Any idea what would have cracked the casing like this? Ford KA Gearbox housing.jpeg

Never seen anything like that before. Must be either impact damage or has someone jacked the car incorrectly and somehow it has fallen onto some object or other?

Big stone comming up from road? Something come adrift inside box go around gear and force end off? Looks like casing marked further to left of broke area. Is that a duel mass flywheel?

That looks like a fresh break. Don’t know what covers it but if your son has been driving around with it like that you would expect to see it a little dirtier than that around where the metal has parted.

Definitely fresh damage. There is zero oil on the break.

That part is also internal to the bellhousing so nothing external could cause it.

I'm thinking hamfisted mechanic here.

The only think I can think of that would cause a break like that, is an internal bearing failure. In that cause it would have broken on the edge of the gear not at the end inline with the shaft.

If the car drove in with it showing like that, it would have had a horrible noise I am sure.

Spoken to the clutch centre and they say something let go inside? I agree with eman that it looks like a fresh break.
I have phoned the dealer (one man band outfit) who says it must be impact from a speed bump or similar, I cant see that, as the break looks too high up.

I mean, some manual gearboxes have undersized main bearings. When they get a big load, they move and allow the gearset to contact the housing. Its possible this has happened in a short time before the garage visit.

So the garage they bought the car from said 'not interested' as they only give 28days warranty. He said they are wear & tearable items and it's just hard luck!
Consumer Rights Act 2015 'fit for purpose' will be my next call

Yup 3 months minimum by law, unless they are selling to another trader.

As you say, Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Was any amount paid with a credit card? If so credit card company are EQUALLY liable. If the vendor messes you about (and your post suggests they're going down that route) then deal with the credit card company.

Consumers rights act is something that many auto related outfits think does not exist apply to them until, it slaps them on the backside but it’s best law for us and beats any so called paper warranty

2009 - 119k - It's a pile

Oil contaminated the clutch. - I'm probably going to have it scrapped and get him another car.
I will pursue the dealer that sold it to them at the end of July. I recorded our tel conversation, so he has had his one chance to rectify the matter and his 'thats the motor trade for you' comment wont go well in the SCC

Don't scrap it.
Under the Consumer Act you need to return the vehicle to get refunded.

As LK said ...I would say a ham fisted "mechanic" was trying to pry the engine from the box with a crow bar and broke the gearbox housing,
If you look closely at the picture there are indentations next to the hole.

Agreed.
The red are looks like marks from a screwdriver used to lever against the casing, the yellow circled bit looks like an aluminium shard inside the gear (that would not be there if it wasn't fresh damage), the green circle looks to be a flattened bit where something has levered against the casing.

My bet is the gearbox was stuck to the engine on a dowel and someone thought it a good idea to lever against the gearbox and smashed the thin casing. If the bits are inside the gearbox that's proof. Ford KA Gearbox housing~2.jpeg
