Something to keep in mind, there are 3 different types of the stand off tube, and some cars request that they are replaced with a newer version. Different versions have different temperatures to check against.

It's all new to me tbh as it's my first auto transmission and Mercedes. I was just wanting the gearbox serviced but the mechanic that serviced the engine was highly doubtful that it was done properly particularly from a Mercedes specialist?

If the car drives ok, and you feel that the requested work has been done, I would not worry.

At the next interval, get the oil changed with a filter etc and all will be well :)

So is flushing and replacing fluid without a new filter recommended or normal practice??
There are machines that do it , see that link I posted above . It’s not normal MB/Indy practice and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it discussed on the forums , but if you search it , garages are doing it .

MB do have a procedure for it, but it doesn't deal with the filter so that's the main reason we don't do it

Not really.... it defeat's the whole purpose of the job by putting new oil into a contaminated environment. Do you have the service history of the car?? When was the last transmission ATF change done, and who did it?

No Jim. I was just getting it done as the new owner for peace of mind. Have you seen the pics at start of thread? Kind of looks like the thing hadn't been touched?

Yes, I've seen them, but sometimes its possible that there's a service book history there as well, especially with cars from that era. I completely understand your thinking and would be the same myself....my latest purchase, a 2014 E class 220 CDI, with MB history up to Feb 2019. None the less, I have the ATF, and Filter, Bolts and Gasket purchased already, and not only the ATF, but anti-freeze and brake fluid too. According to the Service Assist, I still have about 130 days left to the next engine oil and Filter change...but while the car is on the lift, I'll most likely do the oil as well. And that will mark a good starting point for my relationship with the car.:geek::geek::rolleyes::rolleyes:

  1. Hi all new to the forum and Mercedes. I recently purchased a 2011 c200 cdi and decided to change the gearbox fluid. I left the car with a local indy specialist and was charged £300 which included a mounting replacement. However my friend who is a general mechanic was changing the engine oil yesterday and noticed the pan looked like it hadn't been removed and therefore questions whether the filter has been changed and that it may only have been drained and refilled?? I've attached pics of the pan and gasket/seam to get opinions as to whether it looks like it had been dropped in as little as 3 weeks ago??
Looks untouched to me, lack of finger prints or other evidence it's been removed. It's horrible when one thinks they may have been ripped off.

That's it Matthew. Feels like £300 for nothing or very little at best.

Hi to all that posted in my thread. Just to update. I confronted the Mercedes specialist this morning and he offered to do the fluid change again at no cost to myself???

His lack of protestation says it all, I'd politely decline and get a refund and take it somewhere else, ideally a recomend indy and get them to photograph what's inside, for your own interest if nothing else.

I've agreed to be there Matthew to watch the whole process.

Seems a good result. If the magnets come out looking clean, and the fluid the same you might want to have a bottle of wine ready!!! In all seriousness, seems likely he's just dropped the fluid, which isn't on, or what you paid for.

Your getting a flush now too, which is great.

Yeah. He couldn't provide a reliable excuse as to why the sump was so dirty for one that had been supposedly serviced recently. He actually said he may have forgotten to clean it? In the end I'll just be happy to have peace of mind.
