Should be a G280 CDI or G300 with the OM642 6cyl IL Turbo engine I believe, both are 3.0l and producing 183hp, no idea why the different codes for the same engine, maybe one was destined for the 6 x 6...presume you don’t have that?

642 is the V6.
That isn't a V6.

Look at the engine number. The first three digits are the engine code, the next 3 are the subcode and the remainder the engine number.


For example 119072 is an M119 version 072 fitted to a Mercedes SL.

It will be on the V5 if you're lucky otherwise find the plate/stamping on the engine.
Its probably an OM602.

That isn't a V6.

You’re right, not a V6- the only other engine it had though was the OM612 which is 5IL
As LK says it will become clearer on the V5 hopefully (if it’s the original engine)

Can't you just ring MB with the VIN number and ask them ?

Looks like it's got 6 inlet pipes therefore 6 cylinders although it's difficult to see in the picture. That makes it an OM603 - indirect injection, 2 valves per cylinder. Also, I can't see a turbo - they have a pipe across the engine if they are turbocharged. Not sure, but I've never heard of them being anything other than 3 litre.

I had an ex-taxi W124 for 6 years with the 5 cylinder (OM602) version of this engine. Best engines ever in my view. It had done 460,000 km when I swapped it for a van (to move house), started on the button even when it was -12 outside (France), used no oil between changes and never let me down. I used to regularly drive the 700 odd miles back to the midlands in the depths of winter in a single day at 80mph all the way without the slightest issue.

Hence my glasses comment Richard, glad its not just me! I could only see 5 with my poor eyesight, maybe 6 at a push then had a brain fart thinking 642, which as pointed out is a V6 which this ain’t!

thanks for all your helpful responses. its a 1992 g wagen w463 manual that im looking at buying. im waiting on the vendor for the om number but from your help i believe it to be a OM 602.xxx (5-cylinder diesel) i am guessing at .946 & .947 which produced kw(hp) 72 (98) or 75 (102)
