hi, i really dont want to appear cheeky with this post but i really do need some help and advice to why the main warning light as come on on my fathers car. he is in cornwall at the moment on holiday when he was driving his c180 auto along a flat bit of motorway when suddenly he and my mum heard a loud bang from the underneath. he reckons it could have been a stone but nothing was spotted when he looked in the rear view mirror! this may just be a coincidence but he didnt notice the warning light come on straight away but it was on when he looked at the dashboard!! i have been down there (cornwall) for the weekend and have just arrived back home in derby. this is bugging me now and thats why i have posted this. whilst down there i did check the car out and i found nothing wrong or out of place. the car was fine apart from a rattle on the rear near side of the suspension, i suspect that the spring has gone but not really too sure. the car itself drives perfect with no problems that i can see or hear. the warning light is the orange one that is the shape of an engine block and all i want do is relay any relevant information back to him so he can drive back home and have it checked out down there in truro where the nearest dealer is. the warning light came on last friday night and i tried the dealers on saturday morning to get it booked in but there was no reply from any of the dealerships i tried.

would it be recommended to drive the car back to derby which is around 250 miles or get it sorted down there? the car is a late 01 model.

any help and advice is much appreciated. thank you

There are so many things it could be.

The fault codes need to be read to see what caused the light to come on.

Normally its the MAF or the O2 sensor in most of these cases

Very unlikely to cause a engine warning light to come on.

It did in my car.

My light came on, I took it to a well know specialist that will presently remain nameless in north manchester.

They said it was the MAS as the diag said the mixture was too rich.

Took the car in, Warranty Direct honoured the claim, picked it up was charged £450 and all that was changed was the air filter, NO MAS

Have asked for the displaced part and he sounded nervous but has the whole weekend to find one! we'll see what he presents on Mon morning before I notify my credit card company. (I know for certain that it was not replaced as it was as dirty as the rest of the bay"

ok guys, thanks for the confusion lol i know what your all saying though.
so i would take it that its advisable to get it sorted whilst down that neck of the woods rather than run the risk of driving it home to the midlands!

I would nip it in to a dealer and get it diagnosed, should only cost you £40. The engine lights on these cars blink on and off as frequently as the indicators. Having said that it may be something more serious.

It's even sadder Malcolm as they are highly recommended on the forums and I really trusted them! Makes me very disappointed with them and my trust of people associted with the motor trade lessens with each bad experience.

this is one of the reasons i posted the thread on here, my dad as been ripped off enough since owning this car, he as had it nearly 4 years and never stopped podding out. i just wanted to know if this problem was anything serious before he parted with an unexpected amount of money. at least i can call him and tell him he as 40 quid to pay out for a diagnostic and just keep his fingers crossed.

thanks guys for the research on the matter.

I would phone the dealer to a get a Diagnostics quote, it should be £35 +VAT then post the findings on here for expert advice (not from me I hasten to add)

Are you 100% sure they didnt change it. The air mass insert is often the only part replaced and it would be difficult to tell if it was new or not without removing it.

What engine is it?

95% sure, it is a C180K and the MAS is the same for all the 1.8K engines, with only a little black square showing which the connector goes in to. The connector square is part of the MAS and was a greasy/dirty as the rest of the bay. I havn't challenged them about it yet, we'll see if they present the part tomorrow that is not a) new b) the wrong MAS and then we'll see!

Cheers

hi,
i received the diagnostic codes today and they are as follows: P201D & P2020/002 the rear coil spring as gone but that isnt relevant to this matter. my dad had taken the car to portsmouth MB but he tells me after having the car for the day they couldnt/didnt know what the problem was/is. as i have said, the engine and the car is running fine so could this just be a fault? thanks.
