Still waiting to hear from the indie... they were booked up until the end of the month but promised to fit it in as soon as they can so hopefully they will get to look at it soon.

Finally resolved! A new left front SAM unit has solved the issue. STAR had been unable to communicate with the engine and ESP systems and the garage was worried that there might have been an issue with the EIS unit but got a call yesterday to say that they had fitted the new SAM and everything was working as it should. I have just been to collect the car complete with it's new MOT (6 weeks to the day since I originally tried to get it MOT'd). It's taken a while but it could have been a lot worse/expensive :)

Wow - that is good (and less expensive than I hope you thought) news!

I have a similar set of issues in that my SL55 AMG will always start using keyless go (I have an early one with the credit cards) but only rarely with the key and there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when the key will work and when it won't. Had the EIS to bits, no sign of any problems, MB dealer says a new shift lever is required but can't explain why it works on Keyless Go. Separately, the shift lever can stay locked in park. If I rest my hand on the lever and then press the brake pedal, I know when it's going to work because I can feel the release solenoid working. Diagnostics throw up all kinds of Can Bus errors which makes me think these are symptoms, not the problem. Anyway, going into the SLShop in a couple of weeks, didnt trust the Mercedes dealer's diagnosis which seemed more like educated guess work. Trouble is, shift lever is a coded part, so you can just try another one.

I'm hoping it's not a fried ECU - That's way beyond my capability and I daren't think what a replacement will cost me. On Monday I checked out all the fuses and fuse boxes. Everything seemed fine and there is no sign of water ingress/damage anywhere or any corrosion. I decided it was time to get the car to a Merc specialist and using the specialist finder on here, discovered Auto Technic who were a short distance away. The car, still stuck in Park, has been delivered there yesterday and I now await their findings.
Hi there
I know this post is a few months old, but I have an SL500 with EXACTLY the same issues........Did you get yours fixed in the end? And if so what was the issue...thanks in advance

Cheers

The front left SAM unit (under the front left fuse box) had failed. There was no sign of water damage or burnt out components but the failed unit meant that numerous circuits were unable to communicate (including the diagnostic socket!). A new SAM unit fitted and coded to the car solved the problem. I hope you get yours sorted soon.

Many thanks for the info. I'll take the pluge and get a SAM unit. I love these Mercedes cars but they can be trying when an issue arises. Especially when these "specialist" just want to throw expensive parts at it until they fix it or you go skint LOL. Ill let you know how i get on. Thanks again...

Finally got chance spend some time on this no crank issue. I checked the pass side sam and its brand new. I should say at this point that I bought the car as a "non runner" in an auction...so I deserve all I get LOL. I found a bill inside the car for alomosr £10,000 yes ten grand trying to fix it. It was in a MB specialist for 13 months....in the end they wrote the bill off as they hadnt fixed it. Its has ESM gearshitf replaced, NS SAM power distribution module in boot and several relays. Everything works but will not crank, cent locking not working and rad fab runs constatly when connected. Also EIS won't let key turn unless you disconnect and recoonect battery (in boot)

SORTED After "pin checking" almost every wire on the car. I was 99.9% sure I had a faulty ESP module. I then notice that the CAN high wires (green/white & green) had been by passed and connected the the engine ECU?? I reconnected the wires correctly, I then noticed that the CAN high waveform was now incorrrect. If I disconnected the ESP module the signal was good. A friend of mine has a similar car, so I swopped the modules over and my car fired up straight away......his car woudn't start. So after about 20 hours of research and reding WIS wiring diagrams, problem solved. Thanks for the information from SRE greatly appeciated. I may let the MB specialist know LOL they spent £10,000 and 13 months trying to fix it..
Cheers

Really glad you got this sorted. Definitely not helped by the botched rewire. I am all for bypassing things to isolate a fault but returning them back to standard if it doesn't solve the problem is essential. Thankfully you found it and was then able to identify the faulty module.
