Hi

Can anyone tell me what I've done?

Recently discovered (from a post on this forum) that my car has a "hold" function allowing me to leave the car in "D" but take my foot off the brake.

Never thought about it before, but have kinda got used to using it now. However, went to use it today and although the brakes work perfectly, I can't seem to engage the "hold function anymore.

Have I done something to inadvertantly turned it off? Car has just been serviced, could they have done something to turn it off when clearing the service reminder? Or has it just stopped working?

Any ideas?

Regards

Steve

I think the "hold" function referred to cars fitted with SBC braking. As your car is an 08, you don't have SBC.

To engage the SBC hold, you just press a little harder on the brake and a message SBC hold comes up in the cluster. Try this and see if you have the hold feature.

You do indeed have the "hold" function, as does my 07 E320CDI Sport. I don't know whether it's possible to turn it off when the car is being serviced though! If so, I'm sure it can be easily restored via STAR.

I notice now and then mine does not work, only maybe 1% of the time I try it!

Could be to do with gradient or something? Just guessing!

Maybe try again tomorrow!

I find it interesting that some cars (without SBC) have 'hold' & others, like mine, only have 'hill start assist'

Indeed newer models had kinda hold function too...

With sbc equipped, gear selector module fault/malfunction prevent hold working as well as others like brake light switch etc...

Our S212 (2010 model) has 'Hold' - but it is sometimes difficult to get the brake pedal press exactly right to engage it. Hence I don't always bother...

Mine has SBC Hold - you just put your foot on the brake in D, pull the cruise control lever towards you, and Bob's your uncle. Jolly useful, just discovered it the other day.

I don't have SBC but I do have HOLD

Was surprised recently to discover that when stuck facing uphill in traffic on what felt like a 60° incline you can press HOLD and put the 'box into N

Traffic moves, back into D and off you go.

Second best feature after the curry hook in the boot !

Why take it out of D, you are better off wear and tear wise to leave it in D.

Things to do when sat in a queue!

Just to see a) if it could and b) what would happen.

A: yes, B: nothing untoward.

The revs dropped which must have a positive effect on fuel consumption :)

The fuel consumption with the throttle closed makes no difference between D and N or P no matter what the RPM does.

'box holding against the brakes? Revs do drop in N? Less fuel used? Reasonable assumption.

Only real measurable wear and tear will be in the 6 times I used the selector mechanism, Shirley?

Hold on .. I'm off to get my microscope and 0000 gauge hair splitting tool, be right back

Yes, but, mmm with Start/Stop it helps the fuel consumption. Leave it in D lightly press the brake, engine stops, release brake engine starts; or push the brake and apply hold and engine stops, touch throttle and it starts as if by magic :p:p

Damn clever these Mercedes :D:D

I heard a story some years ago. I think it was with a Jag.

Driver gets car out of garage onto drive which is on a gradient. Uses HOLD whilst he gets out to close garage doors. Closes doors. Car then stalls.

Result = two broken legs as he got trapped against the doors.
