But as LK says, the two braking systems are completely separate.

I believe the conclusion here is that both the handbrake or the brake itself can heat up the disc as if either of them are not working properly, they can both result in more or less the same heat damage.

Hot disc symptom - problem could have either been brake (outside edge of disc) or handbrake (inner side of disc)

I seriously doubt the parking drum can build as much heat as the disc as the disc will act as a huge heatsink and rapidly dissipate the hest due to the comparitively large surface area.

Smart + others :)
It certainly can take the paint off the disc when they stick on.

Update on this - some warmth on the same wheel last night even after 'fixed' so ditching the original garage & going to a merc specialist. Original garage 'helpful' but only in the sense that they agreed to take another look but then charge for anything they did. I'm not convinced by them so going somewhere more specialist seems sensible.

Heat now nowhere near as bad as before the service (we were talking heat & some very light smoke then) but still clearly not right. Other 3 wheels cold. Car still drives fine.

Yes, but if one part of the brake system caused the disc/drum to get very very very hot...that would affect the other part...as has been said already by a respected indie above.

I know.
But the confusion was that the foot & parking brake acted on different things

Had this properly checked now by merc specialist & was the caliper. It was only sticking slightly but they reckon the first place should have seen it. Caliper getting replaced, but since I've driven for 2 weeks on the not properly repaired wheel I need more new pads (they were only changed a fortnight back but are already now damaged) & a new disc as it is slightly warped. So I've spent about £650 all in all getting a brake fixed + a service/MOT...

Lesson learned there I think. Is there anything I can do regarding the original garage?

Sue them. Raise a claim in the small claims on the website. Though you might like to see if the garage will reimburse you first.
