Undo the spring clip on the mirror and use that as it is intended to be used.

Have to unclip the little metal bar at the top, push the mirror in then clip the bar back on to hold it in place. Mirror.JPG

You mean the spring bar thing running along the top

Put the mirror in full downwards position.
Unclip the wire at the green circled area (careful not to lose the spring).
Hook the bottom of the mirror over the round plate then hook red circled bit of wire over the red circled tag and clip the wire over the green circled plastic lug again.

If you are not sure how to do it.
I strongly advise you tape it Up and take it to an Indy or dealer.
Why
My heater in the passenger mirror went £85.
I thought that was steep, but was told the drivers side was £235 or £270! Cant remember.

Is that a replacement mirror glass by any chance? I had exactly the same problem with my W220 and ended up filing bits of plastic off the back of the replacement glass to get it to fit. Took me hours :(

The trick is to ensure the two lugs at 4 and 8 are fully engaged when you put the spring back on at the top.

I think you're just not clipping it in correctly.

Also, from memory, there's no need to remove the metal clip - leave it on, align and affix the mirror at the bottom, then, with a longer screwdriver, the metal clip at the top has a section where it can be pulled away from the mirror to clip around the motor housing. The mirror should also affix across the top without the metal clip, I think the clip is used as a precautionary measure.

Also agree with other comments above, mirrors can be fragile and the auto dim mirror certainly isn't cheap £80-100 for a used one...
