my first merc was a totally neglected, 1987 190D (diesel). I paid 250 quid for it (2003) and proceeded to spend up to 1,400 quid on it fixing it up. I loved that car a lot as it taught me a whole lot about fixing cars, but then i sold it for 1,400 when i finally got it to pass its MOT.

this was it http://anyweb.kicks-ass.net/personal/me/mycar/ (sold now thank god) but i still miss it, and i owe that car so much because i learned how to change handbrake brakes/cables change disc brakes, remove dashboard and so much more. It was an experience and the car always started even in the really cold winter here in Sweden.

how much was your first merc ? and what year did you buy it ?

i'm just curious :)

cheers

I purchased mine in January 05 and paid £8,595.

I was seriously considering purchasing a German car, either a BMW or Mercedes, when my aging but reliable Toyota suddenly and unexpectedly decided to call it a day. I needed a replacement in a hurry. I had about 4 days to get back on the road.

I spotted the Merc' I eventually purchased because it looked different sitting amongst about twenty other cars. It wasn't bristling with chrome like the others, save for the radiator grill and gunsight emblem, and it was an attractive dark-blue colour (MB call it green/black) with smart light grey alloys. I guess I was really attracted by its ordinarinous. The only clue to its understated sporty character was the 'kompressor' badging on the boot lid. Inside I was attracted the smart decor and white dials and overall quality feel.

After a 20 mile test drive I bought it. It was a little more than I had budgetted for but it was potentially cheaper to run with 20k service intervals, low insurance (14/15) and high mileage, trouble-free potential.

I am not attracted by flash motors because thieves find them irresistable. They also draw the kind of unwarranted attention that often leaves them with scars along their flanks created by pen knives or coins. There is a lot to be said for anonimity.

REGARDS Phil

First one was a company car - CLK230 Kompressor delivered on the 26th of June 2000. Loved it, company paid around £31,000. MY first Merc that I paid for with my own money was a 2000 S320 CDI which I paid £32,000 for in August 2003. What a wonderful car. I miss it.

My current 190e 2.0l auto was my first Merc. Ive had it 14 months now and spent, well not a lot really just fitting things like an avantguard grill and clear front indicators just to upgrade it a little. I paid £575 for it with 119.000 mls on the clock with full service history and three owners. Here's a pic.

The colour is signal red and is a lot brighter than the pic suggests(took it on a crappy phone camera :???: )

Stu - that sounds like a real bargain!

I bought my first merc for £43k - it was the first time I've spent that sort of money - but needed the car to go with the launch of a new business - I haven't been disappointed. It's just as quick as some of the Porsches I tested, has more gizzers and looks understated, but sophisticated all at the same time :)

Soon after buying this I realised how much money I was losing in depreciation so I bought a 200TE as a run-around. That cost me £700. But it needs some work on the body to get rid of the rust and it burns a bit of oil 8)

I drive the 200 most of the week, but occasionally I'll take the CLK55 to a meeting. It makes you appreciate it even more.

Regards

Jim

Bought my first Merc 9 days ago! It is a 1995 facelifted E220 TE and cost £2200.

Already loving the smooooth motoring that it provides.

I'm looking forward to a good few years together.

Unlike Stwat (who got lucky!) I've spent a fair bit but two items were the windscreen and a new heater matrix - not cheap to fit.

After years of buying Peugeots, we bought our first Mercedes in May of this year for just under £18,000 and we have been very pleased with it :-D

Jensen, my first Merc was a new 1998 C250TD Sport as a company car. I have to say it was fantastic. Great to look at in black and at the time, a very good engine. Have had lots of Mercs since but apart from my CLK430, i'd put it top. Wish I still had it really!

First Merc bought in Summer 2001 for £1200. 230TE (W124) in white. Needed a lot of work. We spent £1000 on it, would have needed the same again before its next MOT, so we sold it on.

However, haven been bitten by the bug, I bought another W124 (E220) for about £8k. Still going strong - serviced when due by independents or stealerships.

Have also just bought a C270CDI for about £18k - am delighted with it.
